Matching the Hose and Flashes
For the trads, is it appropriate to wear tartan flashes with 'matching' argyll hose; or, should tartan be matched with solid?

Not sure if I'm a "Trad" but I would guess firstly that most "trads" do not like tartan flashes. Be that as it may, I would have to say that tartan flashes with argyll/tartan/diced hose would be a bit much. Go with solid colour flashes.

I'm sure someone who knows will be along shortly to give you the correct answer, but personally I would go with solid flashes or ties, probably in one of the overcheck colors. Tartan flashes would either blend in, or stand out in a bad way, at least to my way of thinking.

Generally, one would not wear tartan flashes with argyl hose. It would be a bit too busy. I have no problems with tartan flashes with plain hose. Always look for a general look of complementary patterns and/or colours.

I've tried both, and must admit I prefer the solid garter ties to tartan flashes with Argyll or Diced hose, it simply comes down to balance as I see it.

I'll second (third?) the above. Either diced/arglye hose with solid flashes, or solid hose with tartan flashes. Picturing tartan flashes with argyle hose in my head unbalanced seems to cover it.

Thanks for those responses and I do take them seriously.
My second related question is:
Do red flashes go with everything?

I would have to give that a definite maybe (lol). I've worn red flashes or garters with my olive Amerikilt, but I was wearing a white shirt, black hose and the only other color was the red background on my USMC belt buckle. Sporran and belt were black. It worked, even tho a red shirt does NOT work. I think if I had a colored shirt of any color, they would not have worked. I have green, blue red and black flashes and garters, and one of them always works.

I'm sure there are situations where they don't go with the outfit, but they work with a lot. Probably works like the red toories
I know the Black Watch would wear red flashes with their get-up, when pretty much nothing else was red, and I've often seen red flashes with Black Watch kilts, where nothing else was red at all. Dunno why, but it seems to work.

I started out with solid color flashes...inexpensive...then began ordering matching tartan flashes every time I ordered a new kilt. Then, like Glenn, fell in love with the garter ties.
Now, whenever I kilt up in a tartan kilt I've a choice of which to wear...just depends on mood and accessories.
