Hi I just got this polo shirt at a thrift store and thought it would look good with my kilt(Logan modern) during the summer months. The question is, do you think it’s to much green because the only Pair of hose I have to go with it are bottle green colored(same color as the polo).Would it also look good with a tie and possibly a Argyll style jacket. Let me no what you think. Thanks

It's not too much green.

But don't wear a tie or an Argyll jacket with it. Unless you toss a sweater over the polo shirt, then a tweed Argyll could look good.

The question is, do you think it’s to much green because the only Pair of hose I have to go with it are bottle green colored (same color as the polo).

Due to the limitations of the photo and my monitor (either or both could distort color), I can't be 100% certain. It will probably work. Provided all three fall into the same hue family, it will match (in a good way), rather than looking like you tried to match ... and missed.

Would it also look good with a tie and possibly a Argyll style jacket.

I did some quick online research. The style experts seemed to be reasonably uniform in their distaste for wearing a necktie with a polo. They were a bit more mixed in their opinions regarding a polo and blazer, with a slightly greater number being for, rather than against it.

That was a quick look, however, so exhaustive research may turn up somewhat different results.

Looks fine to me. I’d avoid a suit/blazer style jacket since the shirt is so informal. I just don’t care for the look, even with trousers. A polo is pretty informal and there are better options for a tie/jacket.

I think an informal zip up jacket/sweater or pullover would look good though.

I agree that a necktie with a polo shirt seems to be an odd idea. Can't say I've ever seen it done, as polo shirts are considered very casual. The collar on a polo shirt is usually a ribbed sort of stretchy material, rolled over with no top crease or seam, and no inner lining. Whilst a tie *could* be worn with a polo, they just really aren't made for that purpose.

List owner Steve has often said put on a matching shirt and hose and wear them well with kilts of any pattern. I find the works for me. The shirt and hose don't hauve to be an exact match, just the same basic color.

I find worrying over what color shirts or hose go with the kilt itself to be some what girly, but then I'm old with a fashion sense that is so 1950s.

Never wear a tie with a pique polo shirt it's just tacky.

I used to have the matchy-est green-est outfit ever:

Black Watch kilt
Bottle Green hose
Archer Green Argyll jacket
green & blue striped tie

It was just too much green.

Now I'm older and wiser and I try to co-ordinate rather than match.

An important aspect of co-ordinating colours is to use warm/cool contrasts.

Green/blue tartans are cool, which is why red hose look so good with them (red is warm).

About matching hose and shirt colour, that's fine if matching is your goal.

With Pipe Bands, in the period when most bands were wearing white hose and many were wearing white shirts and no jackets, there was an unfortunate effect when bands were marching of having the band look like a mass of long white moving things

Absolutely no tie with a polo shirt ever kilted or not in my opinion. I think maybe a bit too much green for my taste, but I’m more of an ancient palette hue myself. That said I think most people would look at you and think that looks really good. Remember we kilt wearers are probably our own harshest critics
