Misfitting trews?

Hi All. Back in September I ordered a pair of made-to-measure trews from Hector Russell. I received them two weeks ago, and well, in my opinion, they fit pretty terribly. I'm not a huge guy, 30" waist, and while they fit well around the waist, they have made enough room in the seat to fit someone with a derriere akin to Kim Kardashian. There is just a whole lot of fabric back there. I guess I was expecting a pair of trousers that are meant to be slim fitting and made-to-measure by measurements taken by one of their employees at their shop to be significantly less baggy. I emailed Hector Russell the day I received them, asking them if they would be willing to do a remake, or pay for tailoring by a local tailor. They got back to me that day and said they would have resolution by end of day. I have heard nothing since. What should I do? Keep fighting? Chalk it up to quirky attire? Take them to a local tailor? I've attached a few pictures demonstrating how they look on. I dunno, maybe I'm just being too picky and you'll think they look fine. Thanks for any feedback!

Hi Archie,

They are too big. Not just at the back but the amount of material that is hanging forward at the pleat is too much causing them to be baggy. They need to be remade.

Get on the phone with Hector Russell and tell them you want to make a complaint. Explain they are not fit for purpose and you are unhappy they haven't replied to your email as promised. If you get fobbed off again, send them another email, outlining the events of your phone call. Now send that email, the original email to trading standards dept of the local authority wherever the shop is. and ask them to open a complaint.

Hector Russell is a big player in the highlandwear market. They can afford to make this right.

Thank you so much KiltFitz for your advice. I just got off the phone with HR. They are going to have me pin up the leg of the current pair to the length and taper I prefer and remeasure my seat. They originally wrote down a 38" seat, and I measure myself at a 36.5" seat. I'm sending the pinned up pair with the new seat measurement back to them and they will either try to fix the current pair or remake a new pair based on the new measurements (and refund my postage). Hopefully this will all get sorted out.

Great to hear. The down side to a big retailer like them can sometimes be that they are so big, they might have a bigger turnover of staff and therefore an attrition of skill and experience on the shop floor. The up side is that they have resources to draw on to make short work of customer service problems.

FYI: Quite a few of my friends in Glasgow and Edinburgh have recently had trews or trousers made and most of them have opted for Slanj on the basis of price, experience and turnover time. They get good reviews on this kind of product.

They do seem to give you a case of the drooping derriere - there's a large fold diagonally from hip to knee where you just don't fill out the cloth.

I wonder if they cut them out to a standard pattern which was the closest to your measurements rather than make a pattern for your actual size, the difference between made to measure and bespoke.
