My advice: Don't listen to this guy...
There is a video on Youtube called "May 27th: How To Wear Your Kilt"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFBDTYfW7jc
The gentleman in the video is named Joel. Joel went off to his local kilt hire store and, armed with the requisite "jacobite" garb, headed home to make a Youtube video and spread the knowledge the woman at the kilt hire shop passed on to him. He takes an authoritative tone for someone with nearly no idea what he's talking about...
Several people have commented on his video expressing the view that he is sharing poor advice, but he brushes them off as internet trolls.
Even though it takes some nerve to make a video like a self styled expert after one hour of consultation with a kilt hire clerk, the blame rests equally with the modern tartan tat kilt hire industry who are outfitting unsuspecting shoppers in fanciful and imagined historical garb. Does anyone know who invented this so called "Jacobite" look? Did it exist anywhere aside from pirate movies prior to the 1990s?

Sad.
Uneducated.
Egotistical.
Sad.
Not unusual either.

Don't know who invented that Jacobite look, but it's described in 'So You're Going to Wear the Kilt' so it's been 'documented' since the 70's. It's interesting to me that while the look is so disdained, (and I personally wouldn't wear one of those shirts outside renfaire) it shows up all the time in pictures of various events, from games to weddings, from Scotland.

It doesn't surprise me that these show up in photos from Scotland. Citizens of Scotland are just likely to fall victim to retailers as anyone else if they don't have the requisite exposure to kilt wearing.
This guy Joel also tells us that Ghillie shirts are the most "Scottishy" looking shirts and "kilts are pretty much one size fits all...ish"

And Scottish Country Dancing. Many RSCDS guys wear Jacobite shirts because they are comfortable, roomy, easily laundered, available in many colors, and inexpensive.

Where are these 'inexpensive' shirts at? Most of the ones I see for sale from various vendors average 40 to 50 bucks. You can get cotton button up shirts at Sears or Wal*Mart for 15 or 20 dollars. I guess it depends on your definition of 'expensive' though.

Well, I own a "Jacobite" shirt... and it's quite comfortable for hiking, casual wandering about, and yes -- even renfaire. To me, it's like a T-shirt: casual, comfortable, and most assuredly not particularly "historic" or "Scottish." Like a T-shirt, I think it's OK with a casually worn kilt, but it's equally OK with jeans.
