    need help w/ "rough" kilt

I am new here, and looking for help finding a certain kind of kilt. Most of the ones I see are far too precious, and need to be dry cleaned. I don't do that! The kind I want (I'm a woman, by the way) is ROUGH, so I could camp in it, care for animals or children in it, and at last just hand wash it. After a long time. Also, I'm afraid price is a bit of an issue. Any advice is welcome!

Check out Stillwater Kilts, not something to wear for a formal event but might fit the bill for what you're looking for. If you search this site for information about the company you'll find they have an excellent reputation for service and their shipping is unbelievably fast.
    Also, welcome to the site.

You could also try making your own. The XKilt instructions can be downloaded for free (just search for XKilt) and it's designed to be machine sewn from washable material.

Hi Arete and welcome to the site from southampton UK. If you search the site for casual kilts you will find many references to PV kilts that are teflon coated so to a degree are stain resistant and you can put them in the washing machine time after time with little effect. Stillwater, USAkilts and Xkilts are all excellent places to begin your search.

    kind regards

Is making your own an option?

If so then a scout around the marked down rolls in your neighbourhood fabric shop could result in enough material for several kilts for what you could pay for the cheapest sort of sad things which are sold under that name.

I have quite a few kilts which are machine washed on the delicate setting and have survived for years - others which have been hand washed successfully lots of times.

Some of my kilts are made from 60 inch wide material cut selvedge to selvedge, and if they are damaged I can take out that piece and put in another - the kilt being four or five pieces.

I make my kilts in the reverse Kingussie style, that is with an inverted pleat centre back and the pleats each side mirror imaged and pointing backwards, as I find that is much less likely to snag on vegetation, door handles and just about everything else on the right hand side, where a traditionally knife pleated kilt has forward facing pleats.

Amerikilts seems pretty heavy duty. Like a Carhardt jacket. I usually wear an old Sportskilt I got on ebay when I go backpacing.

Wool kilts from What Price Glory or Stillwater would fit the bill well here.

Re: need help w/ "rough" kilt

    Hey there,

I asked this very question a little while ago myself. If you search "knockabout" you'll find the whole fantastic thread there, and it contains a lot of information and links for you to take a look at for more background info.

Offhand, I've narrowed my options for a knockabout to USAKilts and J. Higgins.

    Slainte!
