Need to put together an outfit quick!

I have a small problem. I am hosting a clan booth at the Highland games this year, and as part of that I am participating in the opening ceremony. My tank is not going to be done until Early August. I knew that going in. I thought I would just show up, and work the booth, and have fun. Anyway I have ordered a Forest Green Canvas Kilt from the Scottish Tartans Museum. Anyway I need suggestions for dressing up for the opening ceremony, esp. on the cheap, and for dressing for the games. This will be my first Kilt I wear, so I want to do it right. help me figure this one out.

Thrift store, Thrift store, Thrift store...
This is where you go for creativity on a budget.

1. (prob. not at the thrift store) Since you are wearing a solid kilt, how bout a TARTAN TIE to support your Clan.

2. At the thrift store: Look for some black wing-tips...these make a good second for ghillie brouges.

3. If you need flashes...go to Walmart and find some cheep solid fabric from there scrap pile. You can cut out the flashes and safety pin them to and old elastic band (check your underwear drawer)...after the fold is made from your kilt socks, no one is the wiser.

4. Smile a lot! (no one is the wiser)

5. A button-down shirt always dresses up a kilt. If you can find one at the thrift store with epaulets, more the better.

6. I would recommend a wee dram.

I would second the thrift store idea, what do you have in your closet already you may have almost everything you need, how are you set for kilt hose and flashes? A nice dress shirt and a tie will dress you up right away, but remember that an ordinary tie is too long to wear with a kilt, perhaps you could borrow a clan tartan tie from someone in you clan society, or go out and buy one if you need to. As you will be in the clan tent all day you might want to bring something a little more casual to change into latter, so you dont suffer in the heat all day.

Depending on how tall you are you might want to check your local sporting goods store for some socker socks. You may be able to find a pair is a color to compliment your kilt. Socker socks are normally designed to be long enough to fold over at the top.

If you sew or know someone who does, while at the thrift shop you might want to check for a jacket to make into a kilt jacket. Around here you can often get a suit jact for under $10 and Alan H has a good explaination on how to cut the jacket down.

I'm going to agree with the thrift store idea and advise you to look at the DIY threads, too.
A lot of goot threads on there about converting coats and getting a good outfit for vrty little money.

If you are going to outside and need a cheap hat that will look great with a kilt, you can't do better than a beret ($8 to$12 most places). If you have a clan badge or celtic pin you can add it one side for a little bit of pana.. ...err flair.

If you're looking for inexpensive (but nice) epaulet/uniform shirts, I would highly recommend Quartermaster's web site. I bought their Law Pro shirt to wear for piping gigs, and have been quite pleased with it - looks very professional and was comfortable even in the heat. (My first piping gig was playing at a Relay for Life in August - it was 99 degrees at 10 PM!)

Thrift stores and eBay are also good sources - I got a tweed jacket for about $20 from eBay and was able to turn it into a nice kilt jacket.

Umm, most clans have a clan t-shirt made up...would be fitting for hosting the clan tent.

If no clan t-shirt is available, pick up a t-shirt for that event. Again, inexpensive and appropriate.

The games are June 8th and 9th at Thanksgiving Point which is between Salt Lake City, and Provo Utah.

Two ways to go:

1. Collared shirt, hose and flash, sporran, belt. Stillwater for asap w/o expensive shipping.

2. T-shirt, belt, sporran, scrunched hose and boots. My preferred games attire.
