Need some advice on wearing kilt to prom.

Well I've just went and hired myself a kilt for prom. I intended to buy, but most places couldn't get one made up in time.

    I've decided to go for:

    Modern douglas tartan kilt
    Black argyll jacket
    Black high button waistcoat
    Navy ruche tie
    Dress Sporran
    Creme socks

Although I'm still not sure about my choice. From what the shop told me if I decide to change my mind in the next week they can change the order.

My main dilema is the tartan of the kilt. It really took me ages to decide between modern douglas and scottish national. Any thoughts on the nicer tartan? Anyway, does the modern douglas look ok with a black jacket? The woman in the shop kept saying it looked nice with a navy jacket. Also the next dilema I had was the colour of the tie. It was between navy, sage and black. I chose navy as it seemed pretty well suited to the tartan. But I can't tell if its going to look bad with a black jacket?

    Thanks for any help.

I think the whole outfit sounds MORE than fine. And I think you were wise in hiring a quality kilt and jacket since you couldn't have one for purchase in time. I think either tartan is completely fine. They're both fine tartans. And a black Argyll compliments ANY tartan. The fact that you're looking for formal attire buttons that question right up. If it were me, the only change I would make would be the hose. Creme hose are fine, but I, like many others, have grown to really love a colored hose. I think navy hose would look smashing with everything else you've put together. Just my two bits. Enjoy the prom!

I second that! Navy, or even black hose look great for formal wear. Kudos on choosing the Argyll jacket, also... it seems like most people go with the PC, but I just like the look of an Argyll better. The Douglas is a great looking tartan, any day of the week, so were I you, I'd just stick with that, too. The tie could go either way, but if you decide to change your hose colour, think of matching the tie to the hose.

It sounds like you did great with your choices and you should look very smart at the prom.

Go with a dark hose...maybe a charcoal with a bright set of solid colour flashes. It will look great. Wear oxfords...don't wear running shoes. Other than that you're gonna look grand.

It sounds like you have things more put together (at least in your head) than most other guys going to prom. I'm definitely partial to an argyle jacket over a p.c.

Great idea with the Argyle, it is better than a PC for the Prom. Like others above, I also believe coloured hose would look smashing. Navy, or black would be my preference, with well shined Oxfords. Sporran strap, sporran, and shoes should be matching in colour and shine.

I'd agree with the prior comments, although I'm partial to the Prince Charlie myself.

I think you'll look great with the outfit as listed, hope you have a wonderful time at the prom, remember to get some photos. As for your question on the Tartan, I say stick with your first instinct, while the Scottish National is a fine Tartan to be sure, I think the Modern Douglas will look smashing. I prefer coloured hose, however I really think this is a matter of personal taste and you are always safe with creme/off white. You might want to take a look at the Formal outfit thread to get an idea about the hose.

    BTW
