    New kilt! . . . New hose?

    Dear Rabble,

    (Happy Easter!)

I am pleased to tell you that I have bought a new kilt - medium weight (13 oz) 8 yarder, in my clan tartan - a Robertson Modern Hunting. At this moment in time, I prefer it to my Robertson Red Modern (but I might change my mind tomorrow!)
Anyway, I am pondering on buying matching tartan hose to compliment my new kilt.
As you all know, the cost of tartan hose is not cheap, and I have a limited budget.
There is a site that is selling surplus stock at a knock down rate of £50 (instead of the usual rate of £185 for custom made clan hose) - a BIG saving!
However, the site does not have Robertson Modern Hunting hose in their sale list.
(For those not familiar with Robertson Modern Hunting tartan, it is basically a 'Black Watch' tartan with a red and white line overlay - very similar to Mackenzie tartan.)
    I have a choice: I can buy -
'Armstrong' tartan hose - 'Black Watch' with red stripe overlay.
'Forbes' tartan hose - 'Black Watch with white stripe overlay.
'Black Watch' - green and blue diced
or - I can continue to wear my Robertson Red hose.
I prefer either the 'Armstrong' or 'Forbes' hose, but I can't make up my mind which to buy.
Any help or suggestions would be truly appreciated.

I faced a similar dilemma and I chose to wait, save my pennies and get just the right hose to go with my kilt.

Since it’s a hunting tartan, you won’t be expected to wear anything fancy with it. Plain black, green or blue hose (even red or maroon) will be fine, and if you do want to get anything more upmarket, you can do what Mikilt suggested.

I was in the same situation, back when my grandmother made me my first kilt in real Scottish tartan. The tartan is the green & blue MacDonald Of The Isles Hunting, which also has white and red overstripes.

I picked up, for around $20, a pair of ex-army MacKenzie hose. (Unlike the other regiments, who wore diced hose, the pipers of the Seaforth Highlanders wore tartan hose.)

    Here they are, c1976

Thing is, when I got those hose the Seaforth Highlanders had been defunct for only 16 years, and one could pick up ex-Seaforth things. MacKenzie hose are probably rare now!

I wear these with my MacKenzie kilt. They still are not cheap, but cheaper than most vendors.

Here is a photo of me wearing them. I think they work well enough. Please disregard the wonky bow tie.

I think you just made my mind up for me!
Thanks for the link! - cheapest price I have seen for Scots National, and within my budget.
    BTW you too, look great!
