PC or regulation doublet?
Hello,
I've read differing online guides that describe the correct occasions for wearing specific jackets. Is there a divide between occasions where a Prince Charlie coatee is proper, and when it's proper to wear a regulation doublet?
I ask because I have two tailcoats, and one will face the chopping block. There may be enough usable fabric to make either a PC with a matching waistcoat, or a doublet with the same. I'm one of those folks who err's on the side of formality when dressing.
Which would serve better for evening dress?

Honestly, it depends on the occasion and how you feel.
Most people will wear a PC for super formal, but there are those who will reserve a regulation doublet for super formal events and just wear the PC for dinner dances and the like.
If you can, make both. Wear the PC for most formals and the doublet for anything really, really fancy and after a while you'll feel like you've decided what you want to wear for what occasion.

I prefer the P.C. Jacket if I had the choise.

I've always heard that the Prince Charlie is the equivalent of standard Black Tie apparel, where the doublets equate to White Tie.

I think you are good to go to anything formal in a P.C.

I've always felt the regulation doublet has too much of a military/pipe band connection to use as formal wear in most cases. Check out Dr Fiddes e-book on kilts and tartans (page 40) for more information on outfits. http://www.clan.com/kiltsandtartan/

I personally don't see myself wearing anyting more than a PC for ANY formal event. THough, I must say, Hamish looks quite smashing in his Doublet.

Dia Dhuit,
I think some of you are mistaking the Regulation Doublet for the Montrose doublet. The Regulation Doublet looks much the same as a PC except that it has Inverness flaps around the bottom instead of tails and gauntlet cuffs. It is worn with a bow tie and waistcoat like the PC. So, therefore you could wear a Regulation Doublet in place of a PC.

Almost everywhere you go you can see a PC, go for the doublet and stand out from the crown of PCs.

To echo what slohairt, the regulation doublet is a black tie jacket, not a true doublet. It is so called because it has inverness skirts like a military doublet. It may be viewed here:

Personally, I'd pick the Regulation Doublet because its less commonly seen than the PC; and my Hanoverian leanings would prevent me from feeling completely comfortable in something named after the new pretender!
