    Pleating to the stripe advice

OK rabble, if you were going to Harpenden on Sunday and if you spent some time at Mr. Henry's stall and if your missus said you could have one and if Mr. Henry would oblige, would you get your Robertson hunting ancient pleated to the stripe? I'm thinking yes. Any comments and especially pictures would be greatly appreciated.
    Steve.

    In a word: yes.

I plan to get a Robertson Hunting Modern (maternal line) pleated in this manner and prefer the contrast feom front to back rather than a repeating pattern all around. I am not a fan of pleating to the sett and unless I buy a tank it seems that I would have to get a Shaw (paternal line) kilt pleated this way due to sett size/type.
For this reason I will probaly go with a Robertson kilt before a Shaw (not strictly the traditional convention but I am the first kiltie in my family in so long a time that it's hardly relevant in our family). That's how much I personally prefer stripe-pleating over the sett. Kilts are expensive. All factors weigh in for me personally, including but not limited to tartan connection, sett size/type, pleating options, and price.

    My tuppence.

Excellent choice, by the way (but I am biased).

That would look good pleated to either the white or red stripe.

    Hi Steve,
My Robertson Htg ancient [Marton's fabric JR123] is pleated to the set, and I am very pleased with it, I think principally because the blue and the green are distinctly different colours, unlike some of the weavers' modern where the blue, green and black can be an almost indistinguishable background for the red and the white. I like being able to see the set all the way around.

That said, I appreciate that pleating to either red or white gives plenty of scope for a nice reveal of the blue or green when you are swishing. I reckon you will be pleased whichever way you go.

I hope that you may see examples of both at Harpenden to help you make your mind up: enjoy the weekend!

Yes. Pleated to the red stripe that occurs twice in the sett, i.e. pleat to the half-sett.

I have to agree with Simon here, Steve. Leave it up to the genius. He will show you the different possibilities (and even tell you which one he likes best) and then you choose. Easy.

I will be at Harpenden and will do my utmost to convince you to pleat to the sett.

Paul did my Manx Blue kilt to the stripe, and it is fantastic (I swear pictures will be posted eventually). Chances are he can show you a few different pleating options, as he did for me. So, to add to the consensus, leave it to the genius.
