    Re: Kilts and Nickel Plating

    Hello all,

I tend to like wearing more natural materials and was therefore looking for a 100% cotton kilt of which I fond a few options. I was almost ready to order the saffron kilt from Amerikilt but then read that their metals are nickel plated which is unfortunate as I am not a fan of the metal. Does anyone happen to know of a natural fibre kilt, like cotton, that uses brass or stainless steel metals? I did see this one on Amazon, but it does not list the metal type: http://www.amazon.com/Damn-Near-Kilt...ct_top?ie=UTF8 .

    Thank you, everyone!

The only kilts I've seen with finish options for snaps is Stumptown Kilts, but they use poly/cotton fabric. You might contact Amerikilt and see if they'd be willing to do brass or stainless. Snaps aren't terribly difficult to remove, so you could also replace them yourself.

I have one of those kilts, recently purchased. All of the hardware is non-magnetic and antique brass color coating. Based on my experience with hardware like this, the snaps and eyelets being non-magnetic usually means that they are made of brass. The buckles could be brass or zinc which are the most common non-magnetic metals for buckles. I dont think the snaps would be zinc or some other pot metal, just because they would be too soft to be useful for long.

You can buy brass or antique brass snaps, as well as simple snap setting tools from Tandy Leather. Changing them is pretty quick and easy. Pry up an edge with a small screwdriver, get hold of each side at the same time with a couple pairs of pliers and pry them apart. It generally does no damage to the fabric. Whether or not they (or stainless ones which are available from DOT Fasteners) are really any more "natural" than the typical nickel plated brass snaps is rather debatable though. The nickel plating is popular because it keeps the brass from eventually staining the cloth.
