SCAtian Kilties, your advice?
So, for my 40th birthday, I rejoined the SCA after a twenty year hiatus. It wasn't an easy decision, and took a couple of years, but, well, here I am. And I have a question for those of you who are SCAtians and kilties, and particularly those who wear the kilt to SCA events -- namely, what do you wear on your torso, with your great kilt? Just a shirt? A jerkin or doublet of some type?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I'll see if I can pull up some pics when I get home from work on WED. and post em up for you.
I usually end up wearing a "poofy" shirt, liene` (sp) or if its warm enough none at all.
at night I usually end up wearing a doublet sleeveless or not with the faux fur cloak my wiffee made for me.

I think you are looking for a 'leine' (long shirt with big sleeves) and an 'ionar' (short doublet with separate attachable sleeves). These are often considered Irish garments, but go very well with SCA and Renaissance era great kilts.
Pictures anyone? (if not, then perhaps I will have to take some myself...)

But I have also been looking at Ravenswood and at the various doublet patterns offered by Patterns of Time. I do rather like the Elizabethan doublets, but ponder if it's really right to wear them with a kilt... which is why I'm asking others what they wear. There's safety in numbers, and all.

The trick to a double/jerkin/vest/jacket looking good with the kilt is that it needs to be short enough. I have found this to be a little tricky to find, but they are out there. If you were going to make your own, then this would be no problem.
Muscovy Trading Company (often appearing at the California Ren Fares) make great high quality period Scottish/Irish garments that fit the bill.

After posting the link to Muscovy trading, I realized that they have very little of actual utility on their web site, so ignore it.
And Potomac Leather has some beautiful, beautiful things, but the prices! Good grief, man, the prices!

Up here in Alaska, all the kilted SCAdians I have known have just worn poet shirts (aka Jacobite shirts, poofy shirts, cheesemaker shirts). It looks like they are sort of trying to make an effort. Of course, the fact that the kilts are typically made of bright red flannel plaids that look like tablecloths will sort of detract from that look...
I am no longer in the SCA, but still have several friends who are. (In my case, injuries to my back made fighting impossible for me and that was the only thing left for me in the SCA.)
