Semi Dress Sporran
I have my first kilt on order, along with a semi dress sporran. However, I have a question, regarding the "wearing" of the semi dress. Would it be an "overkill" to wear just anytime? I have read different views & opinions (nothing really specific towards the wearing of a semi dress sporran during events/activities). I even took the time to read over Dr. Nicholas Fiddes' book "Kilts & Tartan Made Easy" (which is very informative BTW). He has stated in the book, "if you are only going to get one sporran, this is the range to look at". I do plan on buying a "daywear" sporran as well, when finances allow and, it meets the approval of my loan officer (the wife ). But, would the semi dress sporran be "OK" to wear to highland games, etc. for now?

Can you post a photo of the sporran in question?

Folks wear simi dress sporrans at highland games all the time, so it will be just fine!
Personally though, if you are not going to typically wear a kilt jacket (Crail or Braemar or the like), it is a bit overkill. I would suggest something more casual to start off with. You can always get a more formal sporran latter when you are ready for your first jacket and tie event.

I'm with Steve, a picture or link would be very helpful.
It really depends on the sporran and how far you are willing to dress it down.
In this recent picture I am wearing a semi-dress sporran with daywear

I think I pull it off. Now if it was was a fur and cantled model I think it would be far to much.
Here is another picture of me with the same sporran which is much more daring. I am trading off wearing a more formal sporran than the outfit should have in order to make an ensemble that is a study of black and silver.

It can work (in my opinion) but the devil is in the details.
Cheers

Sporran wear is really a matter of personal taste.
For me, I don't wear fur except to formal things, but then I don't own a "Hunting" sporran like I have seen several people wear casually.
There are levels of dressy also. As seen above, the sporran that Jamie has on works with both levels.
My current sporrans are very easily seperated into casual, dressy and formal. I don't think I have a 'cross-over' sporran, meaning one that would be dressy and/or casual. Except maybe the leather nightstalkers, which would look fine with a kilt jacket and tie as well as going to the store in a t-shirt. IMHO

WOW! thanks for your responses. Please know that, I do plan on purchasing a sporran for just casual stuff (daywear) too. However, this is what I ordered as my first sporran:

I think that will work wonderfully.

Excellent choice. It is fancy enough to look good to almost Prince Charlie levels of formality. While I would not wear that sporran with a t-shirt, I would wear it with a polo shirt (though not with hose scrunched down).
For a reasonably priced casual/daywear sporran I would look at the offerings of Buzz Kidder. They are all priced at $65 or lower and are very well made. Several of our sponsors carry some or all of their line.

How is it that you managed to look so epic in this picture?
(Sorry I know, a little off topic here )
And OP, the way I see it is if you think it looks good then go for it. Yeah there is attire in which it can be overkill but this is something that should be noticable when looked at in a mirror. So go with how you feel.

I think the "hunter" style sporrans with the cantle, like the one Panache is wearing, are great for slightly more formal daywear. I'm not a big fan of the "semi-dress" sporrans that are leather with fur on the front. To me, they aren't dressy enough at all for evening, and while they look okay with daywear, a plain leather sporran is both cheaper and, in my mind, more aesthetically pleasing.
