    Sgian Dubh Possibility

I have looked and looked for a Sgian Dubh for my kilts, and sadly money is short . Any way I have this knife

It was given to me by the maker, for helping him out. Total it is 10 inches tip to tip, and about 1.25 inches at its widest point. If I do use it is it ok for casual, to semi-formal? At least "Business Casual"?

P.S. Sorry for the bad picture. My camera is down, and this was taken w/ my cell phone.

That's kinda big; mine are about 7"-7 1/2"...don't want folks to suspect that you might be trying to overcompensate for some physical shortcoming.

What's the rush, anyway? I often as not don't wear one.

I don't wear one at all...running around Chicago I'd either get it confiscated by the cops or end up in an unscheduled knife fight with some twit gang type.

The real essence of the sghian seems, to me, to be it's symbolism. That being what it is, most of us still seem to be interested in owning something that's nicely made and functional...it just rankles us to buy a cheap piece of crap that won't hold an edge. Let's face it, this whole kilt business is where many of us indulge ourselves...it's a sort of lifestyle/hobby and we might as well get stuff that we like and that we're going to be proud of.

Thus, I'd say don't sweat it...so far nobody has ever said, "where's your sghian dhub?" to me. Just feel free to go sghian-less until you find one that you like and you've got the extra bucks for it...you'll probably even appreciate it more then. It's nice to have all of the accessories but it certainly isn't mandatory.

Oddly enough, I have had a couple people ask where my sgian dubh was. That said, I don't always wear a sgian dubh. I only wear it when I want that extra touch and even then I sometimes wear a non-traditional knife. A knife as large as the one you show here will have a tendancy to fall out or slide down your sock and likely be more of a nuisance than you'll want to put up with.

I've been exploring the idea of using a similar style of knife as a sgain as well. While that particular one is a tad big the idea is a good one.

any similar knife (relatively straight blade) between 6" and 8" would serve in my opinion.

I would not bother with it for now, I would think that using a knife that large might be a comfort problem.
Personally now I only wear the sgian dubh when I go completely formal, or sometimes semi formal, but for day to day I don't wear one.

I wear a bottle openner or comb "sgian don't" most of the time, when I'm dressing to the nines or going Scottish Country Dancing I wear a knife. Frankly the bottle openner has seen a WHOLE LOT more use than either blade I own.

    Cheers
