Sporran belts
I recently purchased an all leather, black sporran belt (no chain). I was wondering if it would be appropriate to wear this while in formal attire (Prince Charlie jacket and waistcoat)? I will be attending a New Year's Eve party and attired formally. Is a sporran belt with a chain more appropriate for formal occasions?
Cheers,
Mark B.

If it's what you've got, it's what you wear. Chains are considered dressier, but a word of caution: if they're not top quality they can snag and wear your expensive kilt, and that's pretty well irrepairable. I never wear a chain, even with my dressiest outfits.

I have a black leather sporran strap that has a good finish and does compliment formal attire without detracting from the look of the outfit, and as said, if you've got it, wear it.

Some say so, but I do not agree. I too wear a sporran strap for all occasions.

While the chain is a bit flashier it's not really a requirement.
Even though I have a chain strap I tend to wear a black one-piece strap. I like that it blends in a bit rather than standing out.
If it were for a very fancy do (white tie) I'd say chain, but with black tie you've got a bit more freedom.

My sporran strap, incidentally, was a narrow leather belt from the Ladies' Wear dept at Walmart (size xxl) for $13.00 If it gets ruined, I'll not be upset.

Agreed. Here are a few photos of me wearing a smooth, black leather sporran strap with my evening attire.

Thanks for the replies all, and especially the photo of the black leather sporran belt at a black tie event. I have both the new all leather belt, as well as one with a chain, so I can try it either way. Since I've never worn the all leather one at an event, I think it may deserve a chance.

I prefer a belt too. Mine is black. As you can see the pipers of The Black Watch wear white.
