A sporran question for the Aussies
Hi again folks!
Ok, I don't want to offend, but I have a question for the few Aussies on this list.
The day rapidly approaches when my first kilt arrives (oh the jonesing!) and I would like a decent, everyday-wear, and affordable sporran. I'm ok about going "off-shore" for my kilt(s), but surely there's a local Aussie supplier of sporrans that I can get in contact with?!
Or am I going to have to break out the leatherworking toolbox and make my own? ;)
cheers!

I don't know if any of this will be of help, but you might want to check out http://www.allthingstartan.com.au/ and http://www.celticaffairs.com/Highland%20Dress.htm. They appear to be kilt makers and band suppliers who have a selection of sporrans.
I also came across this site: http://www.nzs.com/business/shopping...-and-regional/ . It lists "ethnic clothing suppliers" in New Zealand. There appears to be many, many kilt makers and kilt suppliers there, including Dunedine Direct, which claims to be the only southern hemisphere kilt makers who hold the Scottish Qualifications Authority Certificate.
Anyway, I hope something there might be of help in your search to shop a little more close to home.

Sorry Hachiman, I meant to include this in my last post:
http://www.kilts.co.nz/mitcsprn.htm
They apparently make their own sporrans, which I guess is what you are really looking for. Apparently, a lot of the fur they use comes from invasive animal species, which are being culled to protect native flora and fauna.... I don't know if New Zealand counts or not!

Gravity still works even in the Antipodes which helps to prevent embarassing moments

Oh Rocky!
At least you seperate Aussies and Tasmanians, I'll gie ye that
Hachiman, I have a couple of locally made sporrans, but the guy who made them retired and went walkabout.
Most of the Scottish stores here import them from Scotland, including All Things Tartan.
I bought a nice leather bag on the weekend from Lake Leather in Evandale, Tas. (piccie below) I did ask him about sporrans, he said he had made them, but not enough demand.
We have some great sporran makers here on xmarks. Freelander in Norway makes a great range, (don't mention the Viking raids), and Robert from RKilts.com makes a lovely "Tasmanian Devil" sporran.
Both are fastened with a piece of antler, so when you are upside down, stuff doesn't fall out

Yeah, I know of a leather tannery just north of Brisbane that has a ready supply of Kangaroo and Wallaby pelts - and if I wind up making my own sporran, I'll consider using some.
I'm just being lazy - and I don't have a pattern or existing example to copy.
cheers
