    Sporran Straps: Leather vs Chain?

I currently only have chain straps coming with my new sporrans. Is there a leather vs chain sporran strap right or wrong? Is the leather better for your kilt? If anyone could help me with this...I don't want to have a kilt no-no with my first kilt...that would be fantastic!

I'm sure others with more experience will chime in here but yes leather will glide more easily and also beware of any sharp, rough or jagged edge or spot on the back of your sporran or strap. My kids bought me a inexpensive sporran from e-bay for Christmas, I have yet to use it because of all the modifications it needs to not cause damage.

The clips and use of inexpensive (let's say cheap) chain can be harmfull to your kilt. Edges are usally sharp or will catch threads. For the most part if you find a thin belt of the right girth you will like it much better. So will the front of your kilt. As riverkilt says "Leather Leather Leather"

I have been wondering the same thing. I have been looking for a thin leather belt to replace my chain belt. I have learned to make sure the open end of the clips face the back of the sporran so the clips will not catch on the kilt threads.

I've ordered Leather straps from J. Higgins and Donnie at Wyvern Leatherworks. You get what you pay for, Wyvern Leatherworks' advertisement is at the bottom of the page. Donnie does quality work, I want to get one of his sporrans some day.

I gather Riverkilt's suggestion is that you get leather . . . . eight of 'em!

It seems, that in "most" cases, the general opinion might be "Leather".

So I guess with a resounding LEATHER is better that means that I'll need a full array of colours! Is black only for dress or will it work for day as well?
