    Taking the Plunge: Diced Hose

    Gents & rabble,

After years of wearing the kilt, it's finally happened: I'm off to a Black Tie Highland-Attire-Encouraged event. I'm quite comfortable with daywear and informal eveningwear etiquette, and I'm dead confident in my dress sense in those areas. But the Black Tie + Kilt area is Terra Incognito. The Tuxedo is pretty much a uniform without much major leeway - Highland Black Tie is infinitely more variable. I've got the coatee and waistcoat sorted, and the dress sporran box is checked. The shirt and tie can be ransacked from my Tux, no worries. My ghillie brogues can be shined sufficiently to pass muster. Only one last element remains: the hose. And so I've come to you, dear rabble, in hopes of advice.

Disclosure: My "best" kilt - the tank - is a Graham of Montrose in ancient color palette (16oz Lochcarron Mill, if that helps). Lots of ancient green and blue, with some white for good measure.

I'll be wearing this beast for the Event. I usually wear this with solid-color hose in ancient blue or green - or claret, if I'm feeling rowdy. Being something of a traditionalist, this will not do for a formal affair. And I cannot bring myself to go the Ecru route. So - Diced hose it is.

I'm planning on getting diced hose of the Cheviot mark, as they seem to be a known brand, well made, and (most of all) available. At the price asked, though, I'll likely only own one pair, so I'd like some external input before I pull the trigger. My initial instincts pull toward and ancient blue and green dice, but the option of claret & navy or claret & dark green seem intriguing. At the moment, I'm leaning toward the claret & navy ...

Any advice/opinion would be appreciated. Also, if you know of a different brand, or a different color combination, that you'd recommend, please say so! And thank you in advance.

**Extra Credit: What color flashes/ties would YOU wear with your advised selection?

Claret and navy go with virtually any tartan and look quite elegant as well.

If I may offer another idea; I passionately love my black and white. This isn't a great photo, but it's the only one I could find. I had to share my kit with my son in order to outfit him for his big night at lodge, so it's not a greatly matched outfit as far as levels of formality goes. A bit embarassing actually. Having said that, it does show the hose.

By the way; as you can see, I would never be able to deny paternity here.

I wear the same Graham tartan and have been considering the purchase of diced hose. So, this is, for me, an extremely interesting thread.

CypherMagnum, thanks for starting it and welcome to XMarks!
