Tartan Kilt Tie, but not same tartan as kilt???
Awe'ight, yall...
Here's one that you might soon see in the "Do's and Don'ts" thread:
My Dad bought a kilt for my upcoming wedding in modern Morrison as that is our family that has a confirmed pedigree to Scotland. Pretty awesome, eh? I think he's excited about the wedding. I got him a brown sporran last year for his birthday or some such, and I'm gonna let it slide that he's wearing black shoes, BUT...
Now he says that he's going to wear his tartan tie in Hunting Morrison with the Modern Morrison kilt (because the greens are the same shade, or so he says) for the wedding (he's also wearing an argyle jacket, no waistcoat).
So... the question is: should I be scared??? It worries me that my Dad's fashion sense has slowly gone from smart to- it's comfourtable so it must look good, too! Well, maybe not quite that serious... but I'd like to get some opinions to whether this might be a fire that needs puttin' out or is it just a mole hill?
Thanks yall.
Aye,
Wesley
PS: He's going to be greeting folks at the church door as well as being in a lot of the pictures, so... something to bear in mind.

You could always gift him with the appropriate tie.

My first thought, of course, but the budget is pretty tight not to mention the time table (wedding is this Saturday).
Thanks,
Wesley

I don't think it's really that big a problem, it is a fairly recent development all this matching tartan, so really a non issue if you ask me. Now would I do it? I'm not sure however he may be able to pull it off. A question that comes to mind is this what are the other male participants going to be wearing? If for example you and your best man etc. are wearing the Prince Charlie then would not he be expected to wear the same? It is after all your wedding.

What about convincing him to wear the waistcoat with the Argyll? That would "break up" the tartan-on-tartan a bit.

First congrats on the wedding. Second, there is no issue with wearing a brown day sporran with black shoes. There are many dipections of this from the turn of the last century on, and the Prince of Wales contunes this to this day. Third.. I'm not a fan of the tartan tie/kilt combo. I have yet to see a photo or see it in person where I thought it looked good. Even if it were the same tartan it just looks odd.

Thanks for the input so far...
I've been styling the wedding a country wedding, so no PC jackets or black tie. I plan on dressing smart ("day" jacket+waistcoat but argyle hose for me), especially since I'm the groom, but otherwise it's more or less "semi-formal".
I wish the auld man had gotten a waistcoat, but due to his girth he's difficult to fit, and again the timetable comes into play. Also to consider is a balance between effort and realistic weight of the matter, if ya smell what I'm steppin' in?
Thanks again, all, for the input.
Cheers,
Wesley

From what I can tell they are pretty close. I like the idea of adding the waistcoat, doubt anyone will tell the difference then. If you cann't get him into a waistcoat, go buy a solid matching tie locally.

First and foremost - Congratulations! Don't be scared - every wedding is a unique and wonderful experience no matter what happens or how anyone is dressed...
Now the traditionalist in me can't help but add one comment - there IS such a thing as too much tartan... Now that I've go that off my chest I'll leave you with this - As long as there's plenty of love to go around, who really cares about ties, vests, or...?
Cheers

As you are going with the country gent day wear look, good choice by the way, I would say he should look fine I'm assuming that you will be wearing tweed Argyll jackets, as Highland Logan said the Duke of Rothesay often wears a brown sporran and black shoes as seen below.

The other thing is that as it is the same family it should be fine. Personally I always wear a solid wool tie with my kilts, however as in the photos here it is also perfectly acceptable to wear a regimental tie as well, provided that you he in fact has the right to wear one.
