    Waistcoat

I understand that tweed jackets need not match the kilt, but does the same go for vests/waistcoats?

Do you mean a tweed waistcoat? Then no. A tartan waistcoat? Then yes. Barathea? Then no.

It is common to have a waistcoat that matches your tweed jacket. But it is also not unusual to have a waistcoat in the same tartan as your kilt (this is often made "on the bias," which means the tartan pattern is tilted sideways from your kilt, so that the stripes make diamonds rather than squares). It is also perfectly acceptable to have a waistcoat that is in a different color/material than either. This includes not only solid-colored waistcoats (buff and red are popular colors), but also sweaters (British "jumpers") and sweater vests.

It is also OK to wear your jacket without a vest, or, for more casual events, a vest without a jacket.

In other words, there is a great deal of flexibility. Mix and match to see what you like, depending on the weather, the occasion, and your mood.
