Wedding Attrire?
Here's my conundrum:
I've been invited to a wedding in Rhode Island at the end of September. I'd very much like to go kilted.
It's at a yacht club, so a jacket is required. My current collection of kilt jackets include a black argyle and a 90% complete grey-tan tweed conversion.
Those of you familiar with New England summers know that it can still be quite hot at the end of September.
Should I wear one of the jackets I already have or get to work on stitching up another conversion in something non-wool so I don't turn into a puddle?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Here is an idea. I bought a western style jacket in black from Blair (looks sorta like the Ike Jacket of WWII, what we called a "Bum Freezer") but without the epaulets. I took off the side straps (to adjust the waist) and opened the shoulder seams set them in there for epaulets. Then I removed the waist band, and pleated the sides to make it fit. they assume a chest and waist of near equal measurements, mine ain't! Added a pair of leather kilt straps for minor adjustment. I use a pair of enameled thistles like rank bars and it really looks sharp. Another suggestion is to see if you can find a Navy officer (or Chief's) mess jacket. They are also bum freezer in style and look great with the kilt, and also would fit the Yacht location. Another place you could check is a Uniform shop, many security, law enforcement etc types also wear this style, and perhaps you could find something that would complement the colours in your tartan. Of course a fly plaid would be derigeur. Just Look sharp and the rest will take care of itself

I'm intrigued....
Got any pictures?

At a yacht club? I'd think that understatement would be the order of the day.
If you're doing conversions, Kerr, I'd look for a summer-weight wool blazer with patch pockets. Summer apparel are starting to go on sale now. Otherwise, I know I'd be inclined to wear the argyle and then stay near the AC whenever possible.
Regards,
Rex.
At any moment you must be prepared to give up who you are today for who you could become tomorrow.

Check out the Marlowe White Uniform web site, and purchase a tropical weight white mess jacket. You can do this on line or over the phone and when it arrives, it fits. All you have to do is change the buttons and you are in business. Option #2 is hit your local tux rental shop and buy a used Eaton jacket in your size, change the buttons, and again you are in business.
As an aside, I don't understand all of this effort in trying to make the jacket look like some sort of pseudo-military tunic. It's civilian attire we're talking about, not some Highland regimental uniform.

As you are a guest at the function and not a participant in the wedding, I would wear the tweed Argyll that you already have 90% done, if you can not get it done, or if you think you would be cooler in the Black Argyll then I would say go ahead and wear it. As for a fly plaid my estimation is that that would be over the top. Remember as the day wears on you can always remove your jacket.

What do you expect other guests to be wearing? Black tie or business suit? If black tie, wear the black Argyle, suit, the tweed.

Kerr,
I used a picture from my wedding in my avatar. It was 92 degrees that day in the Phoenix area, and I was wearing a 16oz weight wool kilt and Argyle jacket. It was a little hot while taking pictures in the direct sun. However, I was fine when I stood in the shade. I always say, "Dress to impress."

Your Argyll will be fine. It'll be cooler than tweed.
