What to wear... what to wear...
Hey, Folks-question: I'm going to a wedding in April, and I was planning on getting a Clergy tartan semi trad from USAK. The wedding is in Arizona, so I have no intention of wearing a wool kilt. Would it be appropriate to wear the Clergy tartan, even though I am not officiating the wedding?

First of all, that'd be a problem if there were people there who recognized it as Clergy.
Second, I seem to have seen it listed as Clark/Clergy, so you could always tell 'em it's Clark as in the surname Clark and you wouldn't be fibbing.

I wouldn't think it an issue. The tartan is not a vestment and you are clergy so I'd think wearing your professional tartan to a wedding would be the same as wearing your clan tartan.

I think that would be fine NightHawk.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I am pretty sure the only historical requirement for being a clark (as in the profession) was being able to read and write, so if you can do that you're good to go.

I guess then you can go as clergy and a Clark then NightHawk. I don't see why you would have to be inflicting the wedding to be there as clergy... Unless you're planning on objecting to the marriage... LOL! I think you're fine on this NightHawk.

Why is that? It's not like it's apt to be terribly hot in Arizona in April. If the wedding is indoors, everything will be air conditioned. Outdoors it will be mild during the day and chilly at night. Seems like perfectly good wool kilt weather to me.

You all make good points. As to this one- I just associate Arizona with hot. And I deal poorly with heat. I don't wear anything other than medium weight here in Denver, even in the middle of winter. However, you could very well be right!

Shouldn't be a problem. In another thread it was clear that the clergy tartan kilt is not a vestment - and most people won't know the difference.
Just like an Episcopal priest might attend a wedding wearing a black suit and shirt with a white clergy collar. At most the tartan identifies one as clergy.

Hi, native Phoenician here, & yes it can sometimes be fairly hot in April. Normally, the high temperature in Phoenix in April will be in the mid-80s with low humidity, HOWEVER, it's not unusual to have a heatwave in April with temps of 100-degrees or so. In fact, the record high temp in April for Phoenix is 105-degrees (in 1989 & 1992). And on average there's 10 days in April with the high temp of 90-degrees or more. So, your perception of Phoenix as HOT is well-founded, Nighthawk. After all, this is a desert metropolis with a self-inflicted heat-island effect that is many years into a long-term drought. In other words, it's frequently been hotter & drier the last few years than the norm.
Here's a link to the National Weather Service web page for Phoenix -

My advice is to check this page the day before you leave for Phoenix to see what the weather should be like.
Let us know when you plan to be in town. We've got a sizable contingent of the Rabble here & we'll do our best to give you a warm welcome (of course, it's always a "warm" welcome in Phoenix. )
As for the tartan, go ahead & wear it would be my advice.
