    X-kilt help

I am making my first x-kilt following the x-kilt directions but I am stuck though.
I have bar tacked down the box pleats and stitched one row on the over apron edges. The directions then say to measure "from the right hand edge of the the over apron to the last pleat edge." My question is: which is the right hand edge? Is it the left edge as you are looking at it or is it the left edge as you would be wearing it? In the image here, I know point "C" is the last pleat edge but which is the right edge of the apron; "A" or "B"?
Also, if my suspicions are correct, it will be about 3 inches bigger than my 39" rump. The over apron is 10" wide and there are 10, 3" pleats, would I be O.K. with an odd number of pleats?
Trying to figure this out is kind of fun but not knowing which is the left and right sides of the thing is stumping me. Is it as I would be wearing it, is it as I am looking at it right side up or is it as I am looking at it in the layout (upside down)?

Hey there! Welcome to Xmarks The Scot!

I think you might get more reponses to these types of questions in the DIY Forum:

A most warm welcome to X Marks; I can hardly imagine a better way to introduce yourself than trying to make a X-Kilt!

As Raibeart mentioned, the Do It Yourself (DIY) Form would probably have gotten you a quicker response, but that is OK. We will still take care of you.

OK, so what is this mysterious measurement all about? This measurement is to help you make sure that your overall math and measurements are about right. The goal here is to make sure that at the bottom of the fell (where you have done the bar tacks), the kilt will fit around your bum. So, with this in mind, you can imagine that you want to measure starting at the open end of the over apron all the way to where the over apron meets up with the last box pleat (the first one next to the under apron). To put it another way, this measurement is the measurement of the width of all of the pleats + the width of the over apron.

With the above in mind, you should now be able to figure out what is right vs. left.

'Right' would be your right as you are wearing the kilt. Yes?

As for even or odd number of pleats, as long as you are doing the box pleat style, it does not matter. If you ever try the Reverse Kingussie (RevK) style then you must have an even number of pleats.

    Enjoy!

Make sure to post a picture or two of the final product.

Ah', as I add this up, 10"x3 = 30". 30" of pleats + 10" of apron comes to about 40".

As you pull on the pleats, you will probably find that they are actually a 1/2" or so bigger than the 30". As such, you might want to trim an inch or so off of the over apron. At this point, this should still be easy to do, and a 9" apron although a bit on the small side, will be just fine.

Another thing to consider when measuring the rump -- it's the inside of the kilt that must fit. When working with a heavier fabric (denim, corduroy, for example) those multiple layers of fabric will add up. You can find as much as an inch difference between the outside measure and the inside measure at the hip/fell, when the kilt is wrapped in a circle "as worn." I tend to pin kilts together and run a cloth tape measure around the inside, just to be sure. . .
