I would think that many kiltwearers are familiar with the panels worn on the kilts of sergeants and officers of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.
Here one is, worn by Pipe Major Jim Motherwell:
Here is a closeup (this one, from the Calgary Highlanders, is missing the ring at top seen on the panels of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders of Scotland)
And with the rosettes removed, showing the embroidery pattern:
Well the other day this interesting kilt appeared on Ebay, the tartan Cameron of Erracht. To my knowledge the Argylls were the only Scottish regiment to wear panels. Is this from a Dominions regiment? Territorials? I wonder.
Note that this panel lacks the internal embroidered elements seen on Argylls panels and uses a different style of rosettes.
I can't find the photo just now, but I have seen a photo from the 1960s of the Pipe Major of either the Glasgow Police or Edinburgh Police, his kilt having a panel precisely like those of the Argylls, but done in red thread on his Royal Stuart kilt.
