A casual look is easier in the US because there is seldom a comparison to traditional kilted standards by the general public. You may have a tougher route, but I think it can be pulled off if the upper body apparel is pared down, as in minus jacket and or vest, flashes, tie, extra adornments (sgian) or hat, then a short sleeved shirt instead of long sleeve). I'd add kilt hose, day sporran and appropriate footwear.

The trick I use here in Mississippi (when I have gone into public dressed like this) is ignore my outfit and move about as if I wore these clothes, this way, daily. When engaged, people forget the clothes and discover the personality within them.

    Thanks

I have worn kilt and sweatshirt when going about general wear when i have been in scotland and also kilt and t shirt when competing at Highland games events, but I am going to the Braemar games next week and would like to wear a kilt but without the full dress that some highlanders will wear...... I note that in certain areas of the seated venue there are normal tourists and in others a quite traditional/more formal wear, i would just like to be comfortable for the day

I have Brown Belt and Brown day Sporran, plain socks (cream or green) and simple single colour flashes rather than tartan, but thought maybe a simple shirt (if i had time maybe purchase a jacobean/ghillie style shirt) and maybe a walking boot rather than a brogue (i do have a brown normal brogue)

"...... yeah when i have worn my kilt when going about normal day to day business i am happy enough, just at the games i didnt want to stick out like a sore thumb neither in full traditional just a casual more relaxed attire similar to what i will wear the day after at my comp

I agree with the walking boot. By pass the flashes with them unless needed. I think a pull-over shirt (Polo style) will work well. A sweater vest over a light shirt will work, temperature permitting. It sounds like you have the rest of the ensemble ready.

    Kilt, sporran, kilt hose, shoes.

    Button-down oxford, with sleeves rolled.

    Belt if you like them.

If it gets cooler, let down the sleeves and add a light jumper.

Today at the office, casual Friday, not unlike David's pic.

Family tartan; blue LS collared shirt; blue hose (to compliment the shirt); plain flashes (don't like tartan ones); wing-tip ankle boot; belt; sporran.

It is 'dressed up' enough to maintain the professional dress standard demanded of the work environment. If I was called to a meeting of any type I'd not feel out of place. Yet, it is also very comfortable. I'd imagine it acceptable at any games, especially when considering past games photos posted by the rabble

I've posted this elsewhere, and I don't like to over-do it, but if you've not seen it yet, here's my casual but traditional. The sghian, pin, and belt are quite optional, and I could have worn simpler hose.

I am not a regular visitor to Highland Games, but you will be surprised how few spectators wear the kilt. If I was going and had no reason to wear the kilt then nor would I. If am remembering correctly, you are going to the Braemar Gathering , this is probably THE Highland Games to be seen at and one needs to smarten up a tad due to the Royal visitors. Even so most spectators do not dress up.

Having said that, if you want to wear the kilt as a visitor, then no one will bat an eye. Weather in Scotland can be well into the 80's and there is a real danger of sun burn for the unwary, due to clear un polluted skies, or like today, where heavy ----torrential squalls can blow through and anything else in between!

So basics for Scotland, brogues(NOT those dreadful ghillie things), coloured hose(not white & not diced or argyll style) pulled up, plain flashes with not much showing, SD if you wish, kilt pin if you wish, kilt worn at correct height (no trollopy kilt height at this games!), a plain day sporran and leather sporran strap, tattersall pattern style shirt is best( no T shirts! No solid "hard coloured" [ie, very red, very blue, or black]), a tie if you wish, a wool sweater of appropriate weight(NO logos or smart Alec comments on any garment that can be seen), and to finish off, a balmoral, fore and aft, deer stalker if you wish or, if the weather allows bare headed is the usual choice. PLEASE, no tweed flat caps, no oil cloth flat caps and no "John Deere" style base ball caps!

If the weather is bad a Barbour coat, wellies and an umbrella will help no end.

Me on a rare hot hot day at a rare(for me) Highland games. The bonnet and cromach are not necessary but had a purpose that day. You can't see them , but black brogues, claret hose and blue flashes were worn too.

Hope this helps and have fun!
