Fly Plaid - Which Shoulder??
Hi, folks! I read somewhere on XMARKS (can't find it...) a thread on which shoulder you wear the Fly Plaid on.
The Clan Chief wears it on one shoulder (don't remember which), and everyone else wears it on the other shoulder.
Can someone straighten me out?? I think we hoi-polloi wear it on the left, but I want to know for sure.
Thanks!!
Nothing is worn under the kilt...everything works just fine!!

umm, the OTHER other shoulder
I believe you may be thinking of women's sashes, which may migrate with the wearer's title and position.
To my knowledge, everybody who wears a fly plaid wears it over his left shoulder. Of course, many X-Markers consider the fly plaid to be the white hose of the upper body.
Some take the high road and some take the low road. Who's in the gutter? MacLowlife

If you must wear one, left shoulder only.

Hoi-polloi may wear it on the left, sensible men don't wear it at all...

There are rare occasions that a plaid is acceptable - basically for court dress (i.e., if one is attending the Royal Court) and for the groom at a wedding. In almost every other circumstance, it is overkill and inconvenient.
If you must wear one, though, I think the "half-belted plaid" that Matt Newsome wears is the best way to go. Here is a link to his blog post about it.
As for the shoulder thing, that is really for women wearing sashes. A clanswoman wears her tartan sash pinned on the right shoulder with the loose ends hanging down from there; a woman who has left her clan through marriage but still wishes to wear her tartan wears the sash pinned to the right shoulder but with the loose ends tied in a bow on the left hip; the wives of clan chiefs, chieftanesses, and the wives of colonels of Scottish regiments wear the sash pinned to the left shoulder with the ends hanging down from there; all of them may wear the sash pinned to the right shoulder and draped down and fastened or belted at the back.
Probably more than you wanted to know...

Since the fly-plaid-haters have spoken, I shall now offer some advice from the other side. Wear it on your left shoulder, unless you want it on your right shouder. When I'm playing the 'pipes and feel like wearing the fly plaid, I've been known to pin it to my right shoulder to avoid the brooch getting caught in or scratching my drones.
Most fly plaids are worn on the left shoulder.

Who would have ever thought that Fly Plaids and White Hose would create such debate

I think it's a shame they aren't more accepted.
Fly, half belted, day, shepard's, Irish brat, whatever, I realy like the way plaids look and how unque they are in the world of, for lack of a better term, cultural dress.
