I can't make my mind up, I keep looking at it I'm not sure is it going to look WOW or hit you in the face

The Gibbs tartan is actually a variation of the Buchanan Old sett (Gibbs, Gibson, and other variations of the name being septs of Buchanan). So, if you want to see how it might look in a kilt, try and find pictures of kilts in the Buchanan Old tartan.
I can at least direct you to pictures of that tartan in actual cloth, to give you an idea. Here are images of Lochcarron's Strome cloth in the ancient...
...and the weathered colors.
I've never, to my recollection, seen this particular tartan woven in the modern colors. Personally, I really favor the weathered tones in this particular sett.
Aye,
Matt

When I check the STA the Gibbs/Gibson tartan ITI nr. 2164, looks pretty nice in my humble opinion...much better as the image you posted.
Maybe get hold of a swatch?
It's worth the effort...after all, it's your family tartan ;)

Think it would look excellent box-pleated to the predominantly green.

I think it's exceptionally difficult to judge a tartan on the basis of a computer-generated image. Seeing a swatch of the actual fabric is really about the only way to judge whether you'd like it or not, and, even then, 6x6 swatch is tough to judge. If you do get a swatch, though, put it on the back of your couch and stand 10' or more away from it to decide if you really like it or not. The colors up close are always separate and distinct. At a distance, though, the colors kind of merge, and sometimes that merging is felicitous and sometimes it isn't. For example, a tartan with a lot of red and blue can look purple at a distance, and you you might or might not like that.

Hi all,
Like them both but have to agree with Matt, the weathered is my favorite, also.

also you have to take into consideration how it will be pleated. from a quick look at the samples shown on the screen, even my untrained eye can come up with 3 different ways in which each could be pleated which woudl look very different when made up. (someone had a great illustration of this in a thread a while back that i cant find right now) you can hide one color while emphasizing another & so on. so a simple square of teh fabric might not be enough to figire out what it will look lik ein the end & how much you would like it.
ITS A KILT, G** D*** IT!

I am just starting to cut and fold some of the bolt of tartanish cloth I got on eBay - the result of pleating to the various stripes is quite different - although I have lots of fabric I can make so many dissimilar kilts by selecting different stripes as the centre or edge of the pleat.
Just for starters I can have the dark, medium or light stripes showing, and there are three different ways to pleat them - so the look of the pleats could be entirely different in nine kilts made from the same fabric.
With a true tartan there are probably many more ways to pleat and get different effects from the placing of a stripe or folding so as to show different colour combinations.
The effect could be varied from bright to dull, light to dark, with or without great contrasts - so as long as you like the tartan enough to have it plain and unchanged as the apron you can get more or less whatever effect you like in the pleats.
Perhaps some of the rather garish tartans are the reason for some ancient kilts being pleated all the way round?
