Morning dress - which sporran?
Hi rabble. I'm all set to go for next week. Morning dress is not an absolute requirement but it is appropriate to my role and position. I have the black argyle jacket & 5 button vest, black hose, plain flashes, white shirt, grey tie, well-shone (not gillie) brogues, and a kilt of course. No belt. I don't wear a sgian dubh at all, but for this occasion I might tuck a small, antler-handled knife presented by an Argentine senior officer during deployment into the hose.
I do not want to be too flashy if I don't have to be, but still fairly certain the sporran should be the chrome cantle and not the mink.
Is either ok?

Reason: mourning to morning. It's a daywear question

Umm . . . help us out here. Are you talking about a funeral (mourning) or daywear (morning dress)?

One question that needs consideration. Are you part of the " first team" or are you just a guest? By " first team" I mean are you part of the immediate family or are you assisting as the best man or an usher? If you are then you could consider argyll pattern hose and the bottom sporran would be a sound choice.
If you are just a guest then you have a wee tad more latitude. You could choose a plain colour , rather than the rather dismal, black hose. Bottle green or maroon for example would do nicely. You might be best to avoid the Argyll pattern hose though. Again, the bottom sporran would be perfect, although a modest plain black sporran would do perfectly well.
As to the SD,you are in formal attire then perhaps not the stag handle? It is a tad rustic for the attire.

Right ..was using smartphone; not so smart
MORNING dress. Daywear
Regrets my spelling error took the response down that path, Jock. Great information all the same. Sgian dubh comment duly noted.

I've no argyll hose. Happy to wear a plain colour hose. Searches seemed to point to black

I suppose it depends where you search! In some places like google images white hose are the choice for pretty near all events with black coming in as a second choice, but then, most of the pictures are supplied by hire companies, or those wearing hired outfits. Well, they were a few weeks ago when I looked. Also if you look closely, many of the examples shown are also wearing black tweed kilt jackets, which are not morning dress kilt equivalent either. In the end though,if you want to wear black hose then wear them.

Agreed Jock, the photos that come up on a search are not very helpful. Not that I want to wear black. From some reading black seemed more acceptable, though that too came from google searches. I figured black hose was to keep the outfit sober and gracious. I have claret (maroon?) that are quiet nice. A matter of black or claret feeling best on the day, I guess.
The chromed sporran, then. And leave the antler handled knife in its spot on the mantle.

Claret/maroon one and the same thing depending on who made the hose. Some of the hose in those colours can seem quite bright though, so go for the subdued hues if you can. A few times in the wash can help subdue the colour a tad, if the brightness thing concerns you.
