opinions on this jacket on eBay?
Here is a jacket that looks to have been cut down already. It is certainly the right length now. No idea about how the leather patches are attached, etc. Who knows about this maker? At 40GBP, it might be a good deal for someone:

Or you could pick it up in Edinburgh

Elbow patches, when needed, leather edging around the cuffs etc, when needed are fine, but leather shoulder pads, particularly when not needed, smacks of pseudo-ism to me. To my eyes it looks awful.

I am tempted at this price. The shoulder patches would be quite appropriate for shooting.
I don't generally wear a kilt for shooting or hunting but did once. I had been out at a pheasant club I have been a member of for many years and the President made a remark about the tattered and torn canvass coveralls I generally wear for this kind of hunting.
The next time I went I wore my kilt, best Barbour, a tweed tie and Deer Stalker hat. My knees got all scratched up but he has never commented on my attire since.
At this price I could afford to have the jacket just for this type of activity, however the colours look kind of "off" to me.

Pseudo is the word. I doubt that one could shoulder or swing a gun in that jacket...

Hoots, Jimmy, where's me seam ripper?
My own guess would be to add another button and button hole ( upwards, to shorten the lapel) and see if there is undamaged tweed beneath those suede patches. I suspect the jacket is from those wild years in the 70s, when "country gent" looks prevailed in the most urban of settings. But I think it is a nice tweed and it is big enough, which so many vintage garments aren't. If I were in Edinburgh, I'd pop in and give it a long look.
I have been trying to study on pocket ( and pocket flap) placement. I THINK I have noticed that American style tweed jackets may tend to have lower pockets than UK styled ones, especially "hacking" cut ones. But that is just a guess. The importance is what happens when you shorten the jacket for kilt wear. We have all seen them where they looked obvious, but I have noticed a few uncut ones that seem to be able to withstand some editing...

Pseudo?
Granted, these men don't have shoulder patches, but the idea of a kilt shooting jacket isn't anathema to highland attire.

It happens for sure, but rarely when deer stalking.
I can't see the pictures by the way.

It looks to me like these Gentlemen are Grouse shooting from the rock and turf "Butts" which we in North America would call "Blinds".
I admire their shooting jackets but crave that beautiful little hunting cocker spaniel they have with them to retrieve the birds!
