    Question Traditional Highland Wedding Attire?

I've got wedding bells in my future, and I'd like to consult my THCD-loving brethren. We don't have a date set, so there's plenty of time... in fact, the lass and I have been engaged for a year already!

If you wore a kilt to your own wedding, what was your outfit like? Or, if you wore a kilt to your wedding, but would do it differently now, what would you wear? Or, if you didn't wear a kilt to your wedding, but wish you had, what would you have worn? Or, if you plan on wearing a kilt to your own wedding, what will it be like? What about your best man and groomsmen?

This is in the Traditional Kilt Wear subsection, and I hope that makes it obvious that I'm looking for traditional ideas. Pictures would be ideal, but otherwise please try to describe the whole outfit. Thanks!

I did wear my Royal Stewart kilt for my wedding, and wore it with my grey tweed argyll and waistcoat with a red tie from Lochcarron and House of Cheviot hose with an L&M sporran. I will search for the photos.

Thanks, Father. You could still answer the question hypothetically: if you were going to get married in a kilt, what would you wear?

    I wear the kilt because:

Were it I, it would be my Sherrifmuir with diced b & w hose, hair sporran and yes, the much hated fly plaid.

My groomsmen would be expected to wear their own clan tartans not a uniform. I don't kidnap people for a day.

Edited to add: It's important to note that in Saxon dress I might well be in white tie and tails, so this is the reason for the level of formality.

My normal recommendation for the groom at a wedding is to consider one level of dress above the highest that you normally wear. Since I often wear a dinner jacket that means tie and tails for Saxon wear, Sherrifmuir & plaid for Highland wear. For fellows who don't even own a suit, I recommend a lounge suit rather than dinner jacket or tails. One level up.

The wedding was scheduled for 4:30pm; so, I avoided evening wear, but wore a black argyll and matching waistcoat, white shirt, cufflinks, off-white long tie, full-mask sporran, a couple of kilt pins, diced hose, flashes, and polished "wingtip" shoes; as such:

Well, as Dominic MacGregor wrote in that thread, it is interesting to see how real people wear the type of outfits we normally see on mannequins and catalogue models. It is also interesting to note that two of those weddings took place in and around Glasgow (i.e., the Lowlands), and the other was the Greater Manchester Area (i.e., England). While those photos certainly show the current wedding industry interpretation of Scotland's national attire, they're not quite what I'm asking about...

What about you, Steve? Did you get married in a kilt? If not, what hypothetically would you wear? I know you consider yourself more contemporary than traditional, but you have a good sense of classic style

First of all, congratulations on your engagement!
Here is a photo of my first wedding in 1976. What you don't see are the cream hose and black brogues (not gillies). (Please, no comments on the gradual lessening of my hair over 33 years.)

Here I am at my second wedding in 2003. It was a daytime wedding, but I wore a Prince Charlie coatee because I didn't know any better at the time and I just liked the look.

Here I am at my daughter's wedding in 2009. If I were to do it over, I'd scrap the gillie brogues for plain black shoes, but I'd retain the black barathea argyle because I like the dressiness.

I was married in morning dress, but if I were to be married in a kilt I'd wear my dressier tweed jacket and waistcoat, brown leather sporran, day kilt hose, and black full brogues. A bit like this:

I recently attended an evening wedding kilted. I wore my regulation doublet, argyle hose, hair sporran and bar buckle brogues. I would have worn the same thing had I been a participant, rather than an observer.
