Clan/Family/District discussion section?
Just wondering if anyone here would think this is an interesting idea. I know some Clan societies have their own discussion forums, but most of those do not last.
I know we have a rabble of high intelligence here, and I believe we here could have a lot to contribute. Especially since we (X Marks) tend to be as factual as possible.
Could be set up like:
Clans A - G
Clans H - ...
.........etc.
Family A - G
.......
.......etc...
Districts .......
Cheers,
Dan
PS I Looked at the titles in the suggestion board and could not find a suggestion for this idea.

Technically, we do have a section to discuss this already -- the "heraldry & tartans" section is a de facto area to discuss clans, etc. Of course, the name could always be changed to be more reflective, I'm sure.

Mmmm, I see what you're asking. And it has merit, although there are many here that have zero Celtic background and simply wear kilts because they enjoy them. Granted, there are many here that can claim Scottish bloodlines, but we're really a kilt forum and not a clan society forum.
I suggested doing some Scottish history in the Off Topic forum a few months back and it was not well received, so I don't know how well having clan society sections would work out.
The biggest problem I see is the possibility of X Marks being perceived as diluting the membership at clan society-specific sites. We don't want that to happen. One of my own forums is generally specific to a particular Scottish family and I really wouldn't want to see participation drop off as a result of offering duplicate material here. Just as Hank wouldn't want to see me offering kilt-specific forums there.
We're working on several projects in the back room, one of which might play out somewhat along the lines of your suggestion, but would not be taking anything away from the clan society sites. Let's see how that materializes. If it doesn't, we'll examine your suggestion a bit more.

There are plenty of clan sites around already, some good - some poor, but I don't think this site is the place for repeating what is elsewhere. The same goes for genealogy although if anyone was interested in something local to Scotland I'm sure the guys here would be happy to help.

.
I don't think that would happen. It's not a zero sum game. While there might be some duplication of information, it is far more likely that any drop off due to that (which I doubt would occur, everyone on the net is well-used to seeing the same info presented in several ways) would be far outweighted by promoting interests in clans and families among those who are already wearing kilts, and vice versa, promoting the wearing of kilts among those already interested in clans and families.
It's called "the information superhighway," not "the information bottleneck."

Well, if we render that down a bit further, it's called a kilt forum, not a clan society/genealogy forum.
To repeat what I posted four days back -

Yes, it is a kilt forum - anything genealogy related can always be posted in Off Topic.
