    Dealing with Dress Code Forum

Over the years the issue of dealing with employer dress codes comes up repeatedly. Perhaps a dress code forum would focus all the ideas and information gathered and be of more help to those going through that process.

Ron, while that is a good idea, I wonder if there are actually enough people that are kilted full time, or wish to be, that deal with this issue. I agree it has popped up numerous times, but a simple search of the forums (top rightof the page under the PM notice) could find these threads. At the bottum of each thread there are also Similar Threads listed.

I don't speak for the mod team, other than myself, but given the space already used for this forum, I would suggest this as a sticky that can be added to rather than an entiely new forum. I just don't think it is a big enough issue to merrit a new forum as the threads/posts within that forum will be minimal.

Have a look at what Pour1Malt has done with this sticky for Scottish holidays. Are you interested in doing something similar for Dress Codes?

I use the search function a lot...and its so good a lot of stuff gets included that's not relevant and there's wading to do.

Understand what you're saying. Was just a baby idea.

Your comments generated another idea...don't know if its even possible.

Would it be possible in the section where articles are to just have a heading for dealing with dress codes, then under that heading the links to the dress code posts that had meaningful information in them. Sort of doing the searching and sorting out in advance.

Are you talking about something similar to what P1M has done with the Scottish Vacation thread?

If so, I can make a sticky for it, but someone will need to volunteer to maintain that thread as I know I don't have time to search all the dress code issues and post a link on that particular thread. If you mean a simple article on dealing with dress code issues there is already an article in there by Magnus http://www.xmarksthescot.com/articles_id.php?id=9 anyone is free to add to this article, or add an addendum to include their experiences and solutions.

Heading off to work (kilted today), didn't know about the vacation thing, will look. Had forgotten about Mangus' article...and I read it during the recent events.

Will look at the vacation deal after work tonight. Thanks

Ron (and anyone else that is interested), I'm beginning to take a rather dim view of compartmentalizing particular topics. Obviously, it is easily enough done, but what then happens to the personal interaction of a discussion forum, once there's nothing left to actually discuss?

Let's take for instance a forum about Smalltown, USA. It is a general discussion forum about what Smalltown has to offer its residents and visitors. It has been decided to separate all of Smalltown's offerings into individual forum sections, to make it easy for the forum visitors to locate information. There is a Restaurant Forum and it lists the location, hours and menus of Smalltown's three eateries. There is a Grocery Forum and it lists the two places to purchase bread and milk. (We didn't set up a Mortuary Forum, as there is only the one and people weren't dying <GROAN> to talk about it anyway.)

Now, when a new guest comes along, all he or she has to do is look in the Restaurant Forum and they know where to head off for dinner. No need to actually communicate with any of the other forum members, because all the info is already there, in black and white.

Rather smacks of a static Web site, doesn't it?

Yes, we can set up a page about dealing with dress codes, a page outlining what tartans you are "allowed" to wear, a page explaining that what a man is wearing 'neath his kilt is his own business, a page reminding everyone to visit Stirling Brig whilst in Alba and a page that defines legal recourse for those that have been inappropriately kilt-checked.

And if we do that, there won't be any need for a database, for memberships, site rules or for forum staff members, as there won't be any discussions, so things just got easier for everyone.

Does that really sound like a plan to you?

That being said, the topic of adding some static pages to this site is currently being tossed around. But I don't anticipate the forum taking on the look of an instruction booklet, even if they are added.

    Excellent point.

Was just a baby idea tossed out to get feedback...and I've learned from it.

Gotta trust the brains of this outfit.

Thanks for all your service Mike1
