Suggestion for a Kilt Photo Gallery
a suggestion
would it be of interest to the users of this forum to have a section on the show us your pictures board which was specifically to display photos of tartan kilts? with some simple guidelines (i hate to use the word rules), there could be established a universal shot or shots for members' kilts that would provide a one stop destination for users to get a good look at what might be a rare, hard to find tartan. currently one can enter a tartan name into the search feature and dig through old posts in an attempt to get a good illustration of the tartan in question, but a gallery of just members' kilts would be a massive time saver and an impressive visual resource. most tartan finders out there on the web just show swatches or computer generated swatches. it would also be visually informative in terms of kilt and pleat style.
for example, the guidelines could be as simple as:
post title: tartan name (and number if available)
post description: tartan name and number, kilt/pleat style, and if the poster wants to add, kilt maker's name, kilt yardage and weight, and tartan mill if known.
photos:
1. front/apron shot (from just below the knees to just above the waistline)
2. rear/pleats shot (from just below the knees to just above the waistline)
3. elevated foot/fanned pleat shot
the only complication that immediately springs to mind is perhaps the quality of photos and lighting therein. otherwise, as stated above, i think this would be an incredible resource for the users.
forgive me if this is already somehow being implemented and i have missed it, or if it has been suggested or tried in the past. humbly submitted.

I absolutely agree. There is a big difference between seeing a picture of a tartan or even a swatch of tartan, and seeing it made up into a kilt. My avatar almost counts.

right. your avatar is a fair estimation of one of the possible shots proposed. the idea would be to capture as much kilt only as possible in the photo.

I think that's a fantastic idea.

I Agree and think it would be a great tool... there are LOTS of free and some VERY cheap 'photo gallery software' out there. The problem becomes the amount of 'bandwidth' or memory that XMTS has to be able to host all of these pics.
Other potential problems... setting it up so that REGULAR XMTS users could upload the photos themselves and NOT have the mods or Hank have to do it all themselves and write the code / text to make sure the lines are all accurate. I have something VAGUELY similar to what's described here on our site in our customer gallery. Each photo has the name of the tartan picturesd and the style of kilt (casual / Semi Trad / 5 yard wool / Premier). This idea takes it a step further to ask for different shots of the same kilt and the mill / weight / maker / etc.
To expand the idea (which may be TOO broad), maybe we could have a list of tartans in alphabetical order... when you click on the tartan, the pictures of kilts made in that tartan pop up. If there are no kilts made in that tartan that we have pictures of, then it'll just have a 'be the first to add a picture of this tartan' note.
Thoughts?

Great idea, great additions Rocky. I will be glad to provide the required pics of my Hunting MacLeod Semi-Traditional.

thanks for the additional suggestions, rocky. it certainly wasn't my desire to incur new expenses for the administrators of this forum. typically, my ignorance regarding the amount of money and effort required to operate something like xmts lead me to make the suggestion without even considering additional expenses. guess we'll sit back and see what their input may be.

It would be mostly (I BELIEVE) an investment of time of someone to write all the code to allow regular members to upload their own images.
I DO however think it would be a good idea and a great value to have such a thing as a resource.

Did anything come of this excellent idea?
Wouldn't know where to start in creating it myself but if it's possible I agree it would be a great asset to the site.
