18C Dirk
For those with GBP2500 to spare Lanes has the following circa 1715 dirk on the market at the moment. Go to http://www.thelanesarmoury.co.uk/shop/shop.php for a description. Lanes also added two Diamond Jubilee sgians to their catalogue this week.

A beauty indeed, but that style and shape of grip is from the latter part of the 18th C, say post-1770 - so not a "Jacobite" period dirk.

Re: 18C Dirk
That was my understanding too, Brian, but Lanes insists the provenance is accurate and that the dirk is circa 1715.

Re: 18C Dirk
Nice piece, Lanes does know his blades but I would be hesitant to go back as far as 1715 on this one. The fuller is forged but the knot work looks a little too refined for that period. Christmas is comming up so if anyone was willing it would be a nice peice for my collection

I'm with Woodsheal & Taygrd on the age of the piece: Antique, yes, but not "Jacobite".

I am, too, although hesitate to say I am certain beyond a doubt in light of Lanes' vastly superior knowledge and declaration of provenance. Still, 1715 or 1770, it's a remarkable piece I'm sure we all agree.

Re: 18C Dirk
Would you re-hilt a dirk? That might explain the disrepancy.

How many Scots do you know that would throw away a good blade if the hilt were damaged?
