    21st Century Sgian dhu?

I like the tradition of the Sgian dhu, it adds a nice touch to the look. However, society being as it is, there are more and more places carrying a knife is either frowned upon, strictly against policy or flat-out illegal.

I saw the bottle openers in another thread, but the reality is I have even less need to carry around a bottle opener than I do a knife.

I'd love to see a Sgian dhu design in a more modern device. Perhaps a leatherman like multi-tool, or even a USB flash drive. I though about a cell phone or an iPod, but carrying either in your sock would be cumbersome.

Do these things exist? If not, any crafters/entrepenures up to the task?

Why not a pen sized stun gun?

That is certainly "safer" but keeping in the self protection theme.

That's on the right track, but based on the cost (~$9), I doubt the quality and workmanship is very high. My dream would be to have something every bit as beautiful as some of the Sgian dhus I've seen on these pages. Except for the blade, obviously.

Yeah, I can't seem to find anything like that, though. Maybe it's just that I'm having a hard time imagining what could actually go there... is there something about that size that you use frequently? Long shot, I know, but it's a start.

As a side note Mr. Canuck- in this kilted picture of myself...

I'm wearing a Canadian Olympic t-shirt I bought at a Roots store in your fair city a few years back. We spend a few weeks each summer in Buckhorn, ON, near to where my wife grew up. Beautiful area.

Never been, but the whole area is incredibly beautiful. Buckhorn is near a provincial park, isn't it? And I must confess that this isn't really "my" city: I only live here during the school year. Home is in Ottawa. Cold, cold Ottawa.

I'm a big guy with a shaved head, half an ear and wearing a kilt. Most likely all the self protection I need.

There are quite a few provincial parks in the area, it's part of the Trent-Sevren Waterway. If you get the chance, Stoney Lake is especially beautiful and worth the few hours drive from there.

My wife is actually from a little town called Bridgenorth on Chemong Lake, just north of Peterborough. I'd love to relocate up there some day, just have to figure out how to make a living.

These knives from Victronix were mentioned a while back. It's not a Sgian dhu, but it has a USB drive. It probably would'nt be hard for a knifemaker to take this type of drive and put a Sgian dhu handle on it.
