    Another Fly Plaid question

I have a question about fly plaids. I think I know the general consensus opinion on fly plaids (DON'T!), but let's assume one has decided to wear a fly plaid to a formal event with a PC jacket. I know the tartans must match, but what about sett size? If the tartans are the same, but the sett size of the kilt is different from the sett size of the plaid, would it be a huge faux pas? I have a Freemason tartan kilt and fly plaid, and the sett of the plaid is much smaller than the sett of the kilt. I look forward to the rabble's input.

I wouldn't think it would matter.

Assuming one did decide to wear a plaid, I'm with Father Bill in thinking the sett size wouldn't matter all that much, and actually might help provide a bit of visual interest... Assuming, again, one decided to wear a plaid.

It's been said here before that the tartans don't even have to match except that they are from the same clan. I can't imagine different sett sizes causing a fuss.

Given that the fly plaid is a vestigial reference to the upper section of a Great Kilt, I would prefer that they match (as if they were a large single piece of fabric), but I agree it's not a major issue and not likely to be noticed by or get you into trouble with the Kilt Kops.

A faux pas? Certainly not. I know in this pigeon holed, compartmentalised world we live in where everything must match is a trend these days that many, particularly outwith Scotland, slavishly follow, but actually they are quite wrong, in this case. Have a look at the Atholl Highlanders website and see how many different shades and setts of the same tartan are happily worn by that august band of men. OK that is the military, but the same applies for civilians too.-------See the group pictures of the Chiefs of Clan Donald that crops up regularly on this website.. Now Getting back to wearing the fly plaid---------------------------or not-------

    Found a picture.
