    Another Kilted Use for Jeans

You may recall that when I went to Mexico this spring I took a pair of cut off jeans and cut away everything but the waist and front pockets. Then wore that under my kilt to protect my passport and wallet from pickpockets. No one would ever think to look under there. Put a phoney wallet in my sporran with just a bit of money in it so I'd have a wallet to "give up" if necessary.

Today, I decided to wear my L&M Beaver fur sporran to the Veteran's Day parade. Now the pocket in that sporran doesn't hold much. So got the bright idea of wearing the jean pockets under my kilt again. This time not for pickpockets, but for extra storage space since the battlejacket I wore with the kilt had no pockets.

So, put my cell phone and extra keys in one pocket, wallet in the other, then had enough room in the sporran pocket for other stuff.

So, hey, jeans can be useful to a kiltie if you cut away all but the waist and pockets and wear them under the kilt as either a safe hideout for valueables - or as just an extra way to carry what you need to carry.

Sir, that is a great idea! The main problem I am having getting used to kilting is lack of pockets and carrying capacity. This looks like a solution.

I love the idea, but i have one question...

How do you get into the pockets without exposing yourself too much?

    Great Idea!
Might I add that I have done the same thing but instead of jeans I used a pair of shorts which double as underkilt with pockets.

First, you may not wish to access the pockets in public if you're hiding a wallet or passport there. So stepping into the rest room keeps your secret and solves the exposure problem.

Wearing this I've found that a hand sewn kilt's pleats allow enough "coverage" when standing to access either pocket.

A less expensive kilt with fewer pleats may be best accessed in private - again, may be what you have in mind anyway.

When I wore the rig with my USA Casuals in Mexico I found easy access when seated in a restaurant to pay the bill. The booth and table hid what I was doing for both security and exposure.

So, exposure hasn't been a problem for me yet. But I don't own any inexpensive kilt-like garments with very few pleats. For sure they could present a problem in public. Excusing yourself and going to the rest room doesn't seem a big deal in exchange for the convenience and security.

One can also turn away from any bystanders when accessing the pocket in the jeans.

Aye, lots of kilts have pockets. The idea for this rig was to wear with kilts that don't come with pockets.
