I don't know the official length but when I carry any knife I always go with a blade length of 4" or less. I sort've recall there is a law concerning this in Ontario.

I just measured my two sgians, the formal one is 7" with a 4" blade, the daywear antler handle is 8" with a 4" handle, I have another one coming soon, but i would think that between 7 and 8 inches overall would be normal.

I think you will find that most have a blade from 3 1/2 to 4 inches and an overall length of 7 to 8 inches. All three of mine fall within this range.

As Breacan's post above. My commercial ones are all within this range, & the ones I've made are generally 8-8 1/2 inches overall. I make them a tad longer purely because I'm over 6' & it just feels right for me.

Quick note: that's not the case in Ontario, there is no size restriction. It has to do with when it becomes a weapon.
Okay, mods don't want discussions along these lines, and I'm not going to say anymore on that here. The two of us are in Ontario. This doesn't apply anywhere else. I'm not a lawyer but I know this one.
Answering the thread's question: my collection(?) averages 7" overall and about 3 5/8" blade.

Warwick, you may want to check out an economy sgian dubh set at www.eknifeworks.com, search under "scottish." they have a set of 2 for $9.99 (+ shipping). It is nothing fancy but looks better than the cheap ones sold on ebay.
