    Boots?

My logging boots have finally reached the point where they're no longer fit to be worn outside of work. Unfortunately this leaves me in a bit of a bind for going kilted, as a pair of cowboy boots with garish red stitching leaves a bit to be desired.

I'm torn between two styles. Either a pair of 16 inch Hoffman loggers
    L652.jpg
Or a set of 17 inch Chippewa engineer boots. With the hose rolled over the tops alá half the cast of Outlander I'm sure they wouldn't look too outlandish. Either way I'd appreciate your opinions.

A pair of brogues is off the table. Ye'll no catch me in shoes outside of a kirk.

The last pair of Chippewa boots I owned was in 1982. They were called lineman boots. The company made an 18" height for use with climbing irons. They were great for "topping (pruning) trees".
Do the Hoffman loggers have the screw inserts for "hob nails"? (Similar to golf cleats)
I find that the Vibram sole lasts longer due to the amount of area that contacts the ground.
I would suggest avoiding the Kevlar lining (snake repelling extra) due to the stiffness, unless needed.

That said, I like boots as much as I like hats. I don't see a down side in either choice.

It's all about comfort, mate. If you like the look of tall leather boots, then pick the one that you find most comfortable. Personally I prefer mid-height hiking boots when I wear boots and kilts (which is at least half the time). I will go for a tall leather boot (LL Bean 16" with Vibram soles) only when I anticipate really muddy conditions (such as at Grandfather Mtn. Highland Games). In the snow I go back to the hiking boots with nylon gaiters. I like the tall Bean boots but they are the most uncomfortable boots I've ever owned...the joint between the leather upper and the rubber bottom is a real pain.

I see lots of men wearing the tall leather boots in all seasons/conditions. I prefer a little more ventilation, but I definitely see the attraction of tall leather.

@Tarheel. The Hoffman's have vibram soles. Caulks are an option but I don't do enough forestry work to warrant them.
@Tartan Hiker. I've never been a fan of the mid-height hikers. NFPA for wildland boots is 10 inch, and after doing a season of that I can't say I like anything shorter. Had a pair of smoke jumpers but an ex of mine tossed 'em.

I've found one example of tall engineer boots worn with a kilt. Unfortunately it's not exactly a pretty picture. 4190.jpg

I wear an old pair of work boots with mine. I like the 10" height too.

There's another member here who is also a fan of tall boots - his handle is Johnnieboots. He might have some insight as well.

I, personally, wear Reebok tactical boots. It's what I am most comfortable in.
