Burgundy Bow Tie?
Is there anything wrong with a burgundy bow tie: stigmas, taboos, etc.?
Thinking of a fairly dressed up situation, so just for example, with a charcoal gray argyle/waistcoat, or a navy blue argyle/waistcoat. Not thinking of a black tie setting.

Certainly no stigmas or taboos, Ted. I find, though, that solid coloured bow ties are the realm of evening wear. Striped, paisley, foulard, patterned ties look better, in my opinion, with what you have in mind.

As someone who is quite fond of bowties, I say go for it, Ted.

If one is wearing a bow tie and one is a 'Gentleman of Substance' then I think a waistcoat or vest should be worn to camouflage the fact. Otherwise wear it I say - bow ties are always a bit special.

Bow ties almost always look better without a vast expanse of shirt beneath. A sweater vest, waistcoat, and or jacket seem to balance the bow better.
Ted, there is absolutely nothing wrong with solid color bows but they feel a bit "tuxedo rental shop" to me. I think JSFMACLJR makes a good recommendation here regarding stripes, patterns, etc.

The Rest of the Story
I was given a burgundy bow tie by a family member. I don't know that it would go well with any of my kilt jackets.
So I looked in the other side of my closet, and thought it would go well with the double breasted , navy blue suit. It might also go well with the dark grey three piece suit. I then translated those jackets into kilt jackets for the question.
I'm guessing that after six, but not black tie would be fine.
I do have a blue bow tie that has small burgundy stripes or something like that for daywear, and I've been looking for a brown based bowtie specifically for my daywear kilt outfits.
Thank you.

Perhaps a green bow tie with blue specks or something might work well, too. I would like to have a brown-ish bow tie that is made from wool twill, or something not smooth textured.
* I had to go ask someone about that blue bow tie because I couldn't remember what the pattern on it was. It turns out that it is blue with diamond shapes. The diamonds are different shades of burgundy, but there are other colors, green, gray, and a little gold, too.
I think that will work. That tie is a little thinner materiel than the burgundy bow tie's, but I don't know if that matters much.
Also, that should go really well with the other things in my closet... *

This sounds like a very nice bow tie: Maple Leaf - fall bow tie - Beau Ties Ltd. of Vermont.
I think I will keep that one in mind. Unfortunatly, I am having a little dificulty finding non-tartan wool bow ties.
It might end up that I have to have a wool four-in-hand tie made into a bow tie, or something like that.

Ted, I don't quite understand - Why does the bow-tie have to be wool? I own almost 100 ties (was 123, but I had a cull) and only two of them are wool (both tartan). All my bow-ties are silk or velvet. I think you will have real problems finding a wool tie - long or bow.

Chas

I like the texture of wool. I have a few wool four-in-hand ties and they are my favorites.
I don't mind silk bow ties, or cotton either. It's just that I would like to have one wool bow tie with browns and maybe a little red in it.
However, I like the description of the bow tie at the link I posted, so I might get that one at some point.
