Canadian commando sweater
Dear Sirs,
I have seen several images of Canadian commando sweaters (army issue) on this site - rifle green, wool, patches on elbows and shoulders, crew neck. I am something of an aficionado of the commando sweater or 'woolly pully' and have them in olive green (British Army), Navy, Air Force blue, black, desert, but would like to obtain the Canadian variety. Any tips or suggestions?
Best Wishes,
Aidan

I expect that was a British commando sweater - known as the 'woolly pully'. These are very easy for me to get in the UK. In fact, I am wearing one today!
What I am after is the Canadian version, which is a darker green wool.

I seem to remember that some of the "Rifle" regiments had a darker green wooly pully, also I seem to recall that one of the "lesser"(!)cavalry regiments had a darker green too, as did, I think, the Northern Irish Regiments.

Aidan, check out this WW1 era US Army sweater. It's a reproduction, but VERY slick:

I have a vague memory of that as well, nbut wish I knew which regiments. I have been wearing woolly pullies since I was a schoolboy in the 70s/80s and did have a darker green one many moons ago - which I alternated with the olive and the navy!
Re. Northern Ireland: the now defunct RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary) had a dark green woolly pully but it was v-neck rather than crew neck.

In return, let me recommend the Guernsey wool fisherman's sweater: excellent with kilts - most often navy but available in a range of colours, including olive and rifle green.

we wore a dark green crew neck woolly pully in the US Marines authorized for uniform wear, but our own purchase.
