Cheap Sgian Brew/Don't
I was at Target and was looking at the dollar item at the front of the store. I saw some $1 bottle openers with different color handles. I looked at them for possible cores. Then I noticed that the black ones didn't look to bad to begin with. The back is flat and the front has a nice side-to-side curve. It is an excellent shape for a sgian "blank."
They are solid plastic, which is hard enough to "hold-up," but soft enough to carve with tools.
I'll get pics up after I mess with one of them a bit.
This post is more of a "heads-up" for ya'll who want SOMETHING in the sock that isn't bladed and on a strict budget.
The "stock" handle with a bit of black Kylon Fusion paint should look decent enough for casual usage. It is a decent base for an even better one with basic carving.

MacWage,
Good tip. For the record I think that a "Sgian Brew" specifically refers to the beautiful bottle openers that Rab Gordon makes.
I coined the term "Sgian Don't" and to me it means any sgian dubh handled object that isn't a blade (comb, bottle cap opener, pencil, etc)

I was using the term as short-hand.
No offense is intended.
I LOVE the work Rab does, it is JUST GORGEOUS!!!
-On my "short-list" of things to get
Your's look good to, not even CLOSE to what I was referencing.
My intent:
Cheap bottle openers (with the handle actually shaped like a bottle, even) that would be "passable" as a sqian dubh-like alternative for those saving up for something nice.
HECK, getting used to a cheap one would ENCOURAGE a nice one. As one gets used to having a sock-worn bottle opener, one is more likely to pay $150 (or so) for such a work of art.

None taken, I think that "Sgian Don't" is a good generic term for any sgian dubh-like item one puts in one's sock instead of an actual sgian dubh. No matter who makes it.
I was only concerned about Rab's work, being he is our resisident knife artist extraordinaire and how valued his input is to X Marks the Scot. I too know that someday I will just have to have one of his wonderful pieces.
Cheers

MacWage,
Have you had a chance to carve the handle on your bottle opener? I am interested in seeing how it turned out.

Old thread I know so I hope no-one minds me reviving it. MacWage, I came late to the party and would love to see how this turned out too. I'm looking for inspiration as I'd like to make one myself.
