Covering my head
So generally speaking I was wondering what you other gents cover your heads with. I know the norm seems to be Balmorals, Tams a few Caubeens, Glengarrys and a sprinkling of Pith Helmets. I had been wearing the dreaded flat cap from time to time with no one saying a word. The last few weeks I dusted off the Fedora and got many comments, most of them with negative feelings of it fitting in with a kilt.
I had chosen to dust off the Fedora with all the negative press about flat caps with kilts. Just wondered if anyone ellse has had any odd reactions from hat choices they had made?
FYI the flat cap is tucked away and I should hopefully see my new Balmoral any day now.

I have a few hats that I wear, being a hat person I also have a lot more I dont wear
The two I wear most often would be my Balmoral when kilted or my bush hat the rest of the time (and sometimes whilst in a kilt) I do have a fedora but like you cant seem to get it to work either I think its just the style of the hat doesnt match.
I have heard that some people dont like balmorals beacuse the look weird or silly but I think thats just beacuse people nowadays arnt used to them.

I had my bonnet made with no toorie by Ryan Ross with the STM.
It's an option available in a pull-down menu right below the colour choice.
The lack of bobble (toorie) definitely takes the bonnet further into 'cool' in my book.

I wear one of these:

I took the toorie off though. I do get odd reactions because people don't seem to recognize the hat style. But it does keep my head nice and warm.

Personally I like the toorie. It gives the bonnet a clear Scottish identity (even if French sailors also wear red pompoms!)
I have always liked the style of my army tammie, and I plan to order a new one next year (bigger on top, and different colour, but definitely army style, and with a matching toorie).
Another advantage of the bonnet over the hat is that it can be folded up and put into a pocket. You can’t do that with a trilby or a Tyrolean!

I just have to say this pic is IMHO one of the best representations of a Scottish bonnet. so often they are shown on a generic manikin head. That and its just a cool pic anyway.

I usually wear, either, a tam or balmoral bonnet ( I have many!). If I'm wearing the Irish kilt, then I'll embrace the caubeen. To top it off, I even wear a baseball cap on those super-hot, sunny days at a highland games...doesn't look cool, but it beats back the sun from burning your retina out!

I like the Balmoral. It's a nice traditional piece of headwear, has nice proportions (well, most of them anyway), and just looks "right" with a kilt. The Glengarry always reminds me of military headwear or the old-style paper hats worn at fast-food restaurants.
Sadly, though, most people around here don't know what a Balmoral is. They tend to ask, "why are you wearing a beret with a fuzzy ball on it?"

I am partial to my balmoral, in fawn by Robert Mackie, purchased throught Dunadd Trading Co, an advertiser on this forum. I am also very partial to my Ryan Ross bonnets, one in brown and one in grey. For days when I am feeling especially jaunty, I have an Akubra Slouch Hat from Australia, "bush hat" to some.
On all the hats where a toorie is characteristic, I have one in place. Just likes me my toorie. However, I think Scottish bonnets are cool without toories as well--toorie or not, the lines of Scottish bonnets are just great.
Wear and enjoy!
