    Cumberbund with kilt?

I picked up a black cumberbund and bow tie combo at the local thrift. I have not seen the wearing of a cumberbund mentioned. I have not received my vest yet to go with my Argyll and wish to dress up my attire for our Burns Night.

Let me be the first to throw out the obligatory "wear whatever you want"
But in my 10+ years of kilt wearing and attending functions with others kilted, I have never seen anyone wearing a cumberbund with the kilt.
    I say no (IMHO)

I seem to recall a recent discussion on this. And if I'm remembering correctly (which of course I'm probably not, lol), cummerbunds are pretty much not to be worn with kilts. There may have been one historical example of them being worn with kilts - maybe some sort of Asian or Pacific island regiment??? But for the most part, no. It just wouldn't look right. Proportions would be all off.

    Frankly, sounds odd to me.

    Re: Cumberbund with kilt?

I have seen cumberbunds worn with varying degrees of success at a couple of events. When I first started wearing kilts and was converting a vintage tailcoat to a PC style coatee I played around with idea of wearing one myself.

I wasn't pleased with the look myself and discarded the idea.

With an argll jacket a far better look is to wear a tuxedo style shirt with a bow tie and a belt with a fancy waistplate like I am sporting in the "1 kilt, 10 looks" like this

Or a nice dress shirt and regular tie like this.

(Both photos from our San Francisco branch of the RSCDS Valentines Ball last year when my PC Style coatee gave up the ghost. Vigourous dancing and vintage clothing isn't a good mix and after a few years the jacket began to fall apart )

The belt takes the place of the cumberbund and looks, in my opinion, far better.

    Hope this was of help.

    Cheers

Very good point! You've just given me more ammunition in my list of excuses why I don't dance!

You should try dancing in a Montrose Doublet, at last years RSCDS Peterborough Burns Night I was part of the demo team we did the Reel of the 51st Division, I was wearing my Montrose Doublet. It is however an effective weight loss program.

As to the cumberbund I would not wear one with the kilt.

The old USAF Pipes & Drums (not the current USAFR P & D) wore a cummerbund with a Prince Charlie jacket at one point, as depicted in the Company of Military Historian's plate of their uniforms.

    What say I?

Do not wear a cummerbund with a kilt.

Learn to tie a bow tie and ditch the pre-tied

    Win, win and win.

    Regards

    Chas
