    Dress Sporrans and Cantles?

Does anyone have a nice dress sporran that they can take pictures of and post showing the details of construction, including the "pouch" parts?

I've been hunting through Google Images, and while there are lots of pictures of sporrans, including the hair sporrans, fur sporrans, and leather sporrans, I've been unable to find an image showing the attachment of the cantle and how the pouch is constructed.

I don't know if you've seen them, but there are a couple pics in this thread:

    Yes, I've seen those - they're what I'd call "semi-dress."

I'm looking for pictures of the cantle mounting and pouch for one of the "arch-topped" cantles, or a "full dress" sporran.

I'll try and get some pics tonight or tomorrow if no one else posts first. The cheap dress sporran I got recently appears to have just three screws passing thru the leather into the cantle at each of the circular bumps. From the inside there is leather covering the screws so you can't see them (or get scratched by them).

The tassles pass thru the leather and fur and are held in place with split rings hooked to the chain.

    Thank you.

Additional question - has anyone seen a type of cantle that opens like the mouth of a purse instead of having a flap on the backside of the sporran?

I put a couple of pics up. See what you can determine from them if you want to see something more specific let me know.

You can see the screw head bulging under the leather in one shot.

It appears there is a rigid piece of something in front which has the main fur afixed to. Then the gusset part is stitched to that inside out then folded over into positionand stitched to the back with the trim leather to cover the seam. Then a Finish panel is added to the front inside to cover the seams there and the cantel added and screwed in place. Then a very thin strip of leather to cover the screw heads.

Really is a very basic rig and should be very easy to duplicate.

This is almost everything I needed to see - if you can pull back just a little bit and show how the sporran closes, that would be good - is it just an opening that mirrors the curve of the cantle, with a snap-and-button strap to hold it "closed?"

Just uploaded the pic. You're exactly right. The tab is anchored behind the cantle anchored to the center screw. It's not the best method but it's OK.

    Hrm.

I have something in mind, and that's not what I'd like to do...

Probably something closer to a "change purse" top than anything I've seen as a cantle. Maybe something like this, but in a semi-circular form instead of a rectangular, with a punched nickel, silver, or brass platen to decorate the front a bit more...
