Extra storage - just curious
I am curious about what people do when they have more things to carry than what would normally fit into a sporran. Traditional photos seem to show some, especially military folks, with leather and/or tartan patterned shoulder bags of some sort. However, that particular tradition must have fallen off. Since a backpack does not seem to fit in, it would be interesting to know what others bring along when spending, say, a day out and about while kilted.

First thing I do is strip down what I'm carrying to the bare essentials. Second, I put as much of the "overflow" as possible into my jacket pockets. If I have no jacket, I do have what is sometimes referred to as a "Piper's Pouch" which can be helpful in a "field" kind of situation.

Pockets. Problem solved.
I actually cannot understand why no one else has not thought pockets in kilts were essential before me.

Jacket and waistcoat pockets are usually my go-tos for this problem. When great kilted I sometimes use the folds as large pockets. I've also been known to use a brief case depending on the situation. Admittedly, I have also used a replica 18th century haversack when function trumps fashion.

My solution:
Buy a sporran with reasonable room and some inner departments. The Carryall Sporran has been my companion all my kilted life. Really useful. Add it to some "fisherman's vest" with good pockets (as I would wear with trousers) and you have enough cargo capacity for everyday life or travel.
Freedom Kilts kilt with pockets is really tempting. I just haven't had the cash for the kilt + shipping + VAT + customs.

Right on! Pockets are the way to go. Since Steve made me a band kilt with pockets, my rather small band sporran no longer bulges and weighs a ton with the extra stuff the PM of a lower grade pipe band needs to carry. And I no longer have to remove my wallet, bagpipe tuner and cellphone to find my swiss knife in the bottom of the sporran pouch.
When I'm wearing one of my own, pocketless, kilts, I favour my Carry-All sporran to carry my stuff, although, when not with the band, I don't need quite as much.

I agree that a Piper's Pouch can be handy! I'll normally have one on the belt to carry my camera. (Additionally, I'll often wear a water bottle holder - I break into a sweat reading a newspaper.) If needed, I might even wear two. Here's what they look like:

When a sporran is too small, and a backpack too large, I have a satchel from Saddleback Leather that suits admirably.

When it's too much for my wife to carry....... just kidding ......sort of......
I use a Duluth pack Deluxe shell bag. A few months ago they had a really crazy sale on the various Duluth Pack products on Amazon. Things were rotating daily and many were going dirt cheap, far below dealer cost, or even what I could make some of that stuff for. I picked up a shell bag and my wife got a briefcase for work. I think both together came out under $75. Beautifully made and tough as nails.
