Family Kilt pins
Does anyone know of a place that will carry less common kilt pins? I'm looking for my family pin (Christie) which is a sept of Farquharson. I want to carry out the family detail as the kilt is in the Farquharson tartan.

There may not be one, especially if the surname is a "sept" of a larger Clan. Remember than a clansman's badge depicts the crest of the Clan Chief, and not all Scottish surnames were clans.
The whole concept of septs is somewhat spurrious anyway, since many sept names were assigned by tartan merchants to sell more tartans. There are affiliated families with a number of Highland clans, of course, but a bit of research is generally involved.
So your best bet is probably to either go with a Farquharson badge, since you're wearing that tartan anyway, or to go with a more "universal" kilt pin such as the regimental issue "blanket pin" or one with a Lion Rampant/Thistle/St.Andrew etc.

Todd

Oh, Todd, you underestimate the determination of merchants to provide everything an eager new clansman would want to show his pride in his roots!

Thanks. I thought that it may not be available from looking around. I just like my family crest.

Just an FYI...in Scotland, there is no such thing as a "family crest". Coats-of-arms belong to individuals, and in the case of the clansman's badge, the crest in question is taken from the arms of the Chief.

Thank you for sharing that info, am I wrong but didn't most family crests belong to nobles? Or larger Clans who did have clan Chiefs'?

Coat-of-Arms (not "family crests") belonged to individuals, and whilst traditionally associated with the gentry, others have and continue to bear arms, such as Robert Burns and George Washington.

My friend and I have had similar trouble locating much of anything in her family name, mac Eachain. It's a sept of mac Donald of Clanranald, so there's plenty of stuff along those lines. The big clans get all the glory!

Ah well. I'd been looking to have a more direct family connection in my dress outfit and I'm not tempted to wear the Christie tartan. Colors to make the eyes scream.
I guess that pushes me more towards the Scott B&W tartan. My grandma is a Scott (my middle name is Scott to pass it on) and my grandfather is a Christy. All of the connections are old but fairly well maintained and directly traceable, since we've been in the US since around 1700.
