Flashes - notched or frayed?
I have a question for those more in the know than I am (a wide audience, believe me). Several years ago I purchased a kilt for my daughter's wedding. It came with tartan flashes that were simply a flattened, sewn tube of fabric with a squared, fringed end. They were the first tartan flashes I owned and have served me well. All of the tartan flashes I have seen or received since then have had notched ends. Is one style more correct/preferred over the other or are both equally accepted?

I think it doesn't matter much except what you like. I like my garters tied, not elastic. The ends are sort of frayed-looking and just peek out from under my hose. My band, on the other hand, has large red, notched heavy cotton ribbon that hangs down, if I do it well, only an inch or so but some in our band have two to three inches hanging and they have to be on the line beginning at the center of the shin going out-board side.
Each to his own.
