    Flashes question...

I read somewhere that wearing flashes with elastic bands on a regular basis could lead to varicose veins. Has anyone else heard of this? On that note, can anyone tell me where I could find non-elastic flashes that tie on?

Difficult one to call. If the elastic is too tight it will constrict the leg's circulation and yes it could encourage varicose veins. On the other hand a suitable evenly applied and not too tight elasticated pressure can be beneficial to the leg's circulation hence the popularity of support hose and elasticated flight socks. I've had a varicose veins op 14 years ago and have varicose veins developing again so am always careful not to have the hose elastic too tight. IMHO varicose veins are more likely to arise from doing a job where you are standing a lot, for example a sales assistant.

Check out our own Matt Newsome at the Scottish Tartan Museum.

These are the original style of tie-up garters.

And your elastic garters should never be so tight to cut off circulation. That's why they usually have some adjustability to them. They should be just snug enough to hold the hose in place.

Thanks for for the information and the link. It sounds like I don't really have to worry about getting varicose veins from my elastic flashes as I don't wear them tight. I am on my feet all day at work, though (I'm a boatbuilder). I'm definitely going to snag a pair of those tie-up garters. They look great under the hose.

I have replaced all of the elastic in my flashes with velcro. It allows me to wear the traditional garters with my tree trunk calves.
