    Flashes, yea or nay?

    Hello Gentlemen,

When I ordered my kilt I went ahead and ordered a set of flashes. My question is do you everyday kilt wearers wear the flashes or are they for special occasions?

    Thanks,
    R. Anderson

I've seen guys wear them with tee shirts to Kilts Night and it looked all right.
Personally, I find them a bit of an extra hassle to put on, so I usually don't bother, unless it's a dressy event.
I often wear elastics to hold up my socks when I want them up. I just rarely put flashes on them.

I wear flashes every time I wear kilt hose. Since its a bit too hot and humid now in GA, I dont wear them, but during the cold months they keep my legs warm and I wear flashes with them.

I've got 5 or 6 pairs of kilt hose, and not a one of them will stay up without flashes (or a garter of some kind), so I would say yes wear them.

    I'll second that.

I bought some 3/4" wide underwear elastic from a fabric store to make mine. I sewed mine in a loop but the ends could just as easily be stapled, glued, or taped together. Just don't make 'em tooo tight.

I only wear them when I get "dressed up". Most of my everyday kilt-wearing is with boots and rolled-down socks, so...

I wear elastics most of the time. I wear flashes only with semi-formal and formal wear.

Flashes are perfectly acceptable for casual, semi-formal, and formal wear. In other words, all occasions.

As others here mentioned, unless you want to be pulling your sagging kilt hose up all day, some kind of garter is necessary to keep them in place. Some people here have discussed making their own elastic garters sans flashes (or you could just take the flashes off of a set of garters you already have), but I personally don't see a need to go through the trouble. Flashes are neither casual or formal wear -- they are just part of any kilt outfit. So feel free to wear them any time.

Gotta agree with M.A.C. on this one, but wearing flashes (et al) is relative to personal choice so I'd wear them if you're comfortable wearing them. If not, don't.
